PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Houston Acosta (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chun Quen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Houston Acosta!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chun Quen!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Quen throws a low kick but Acosta avoids it.

Quen has closed the distance and engaged Acosta in a clinch.
Acosta is working for takedown but Quen is calmly controlling the position for now.
Acosta is trying to drag Quen to the mat but Quen just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Quen misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Acosta.
Acosta goes for a takedown attempt but Quen pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Houston Acosta. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Quen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Acosta explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chun Quen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Quen drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Quen is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Quen gets to his feet - Acosta follows without any prompting.

Quen gets a double leg takedown into Acosta's guard.

Quen is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Quen postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Acosta to stand up.

Acosta tries for a takedown but Quen sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Acosta is breathing heavily.
Acosta fails with a takedown attempt.
Acosta throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Acosta avoids the head kick by Quen.
Acosta is looking to land body kicks.

Quen fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Acosta sprawls well initially but Quen persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Quen in particular looking to stall.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

It looks like Quen might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Acosta really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Quen trying to mount his opponent but Acosta defends it.

Quen is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Quen wants to take a breather but Acosta is having none of it.
Acosta throws a sloppy strike from the bottom. He's now off balance and Quen manages to pass to side control.
Quen just content to control the position.
Acosta throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Acosta is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chun Quen dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Quen moves out of range as Acosta throws a body kick.
Acosta misses with a takedown attempt - Quen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Quen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Quen throws a sloppy head kick and Acosta moves out of range easily.

Quen drives through with a takedown into Acosta's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Quen wants to pass the guard but Acosta is keeping the position.

Acosta has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Quen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Quen wants to control from the top but Acosta keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Quen gets to his feet. Acosta looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Acosta gets tackled into the cage by Quen. Quen maintains the clinch.
Acosta has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Quen avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Quen pulls guard effortlessly.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Acosta's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Acosta is fighting to break Quen's control of his arms but Quen is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Quen keeping moving, preventing Acosta from controlling successfully.
Quen wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Quen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Acosta gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Acosta throws a big right hand that misses.

Quen pushes Acosta off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Acosta throws a front kick that sends Quen stumbling back into the cage.

Acosta closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Quen did well to prevent Acosta getting side control.

Acosta fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Quen avoids it really well and circles away.

Acosta misses with a kick to the body.
Acosta moves in looking to clinch but Quen pushes him off.
No luck for Acosta with that takedown attempt.
Quen feints and then cracks Acosta's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Acosta down.

Quen closes the distance and clinches.

Quen gets control of Acosta's arms and successfully pulls guard. Quen will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Chun Quen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Acosta working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Quen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Quen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Acosta will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Acosta manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Acosta wants to take the fight to the mat but Quen manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Acosta tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Quen just stands there and leans against the cage.
Acosta has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Quen is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Houston Acosta. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Quen works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Quen breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Acosta takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

Quen shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Acosta is trying to defend but Quen finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Acosta looks very frustrated and is flailing away with strikes from the bottom. His corner are telling him to stay calm.

Acosta is looking to improve his position but Quen isn't that keen on the idea.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Quen stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Quen moves into the clinch.
Acosta wants a takedown but no success here.
Quen tries a knee to the head but Acosta blocks it.

Quen pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Quen throws a nice outside leg kick.

Quen changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Acosta looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Acosta wants to get back to his feet but Quen is dominant here and he's now got Acosta's back!

Oooh a big shot gets through from Quen. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Acosta is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Quen gets his way!

Quen has his opponent's back but Acosta is looking to stand. He manages to get to his feet and shakes off Quen.

Quen seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Acosta does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Houston Acosta has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chun Quen is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Acosta throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Chun Quen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Quen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
