Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between James Bates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Scott Kannberg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bates comes to the cage accompanied by Gentleman. Kannberg has chosen Pavement: 'Date with IKEA' as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. James Bates has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, James Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 1, fighting out of The Island, Scott Kannberg!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, David Hoff and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kannberg throws a right and a left that both miss.
Kannberg throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Bates sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Bates gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Kannberg to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Bates definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Kannberg lands a couple of digs.
Kannberg is in close to Bates's body, working some short punches and elbows.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bates keeping full guard, as Kannberg tries to pass.
Kannberg lands a couple of decent looking shots.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kannberg wants to control from the top but Bates keeps moving.

Kannberg won't allow Bates to sweep him here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kannberg postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Kannberg is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Bates knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kannberg on the ground.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
James Bates is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Kannberg fails to land the takedown.
Kannberg throws a combination that misses
and Bates counters with a nice uppercut.
Bates takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
A telegraphed right hand from Kannberg misses the target.

Kannberg dives in and scores a takedown into Bates's guard.

Bates is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kannberg wants to pass the guard but Bates is keeping the position.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Kannberg is in close to Bates's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kannberg with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

That's time! Bates's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Bates takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.


Bates is rocked!
Kannberg throws a lazy right hand but Bates sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Oh Bates is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Jab by Kannberg.
Kannberg looks to land a combination but Bates avoids it well.
Bates jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Bates paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Kannberg swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Kannberg fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Kannberg misses the body punch
and Bates counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Kannberg just misses with a punch to the body.
Bates seems to have got his legs back now.
Kannberg misses with a combination
and Bates cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bates lands an overhand right.

Kannberg shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Bates napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Bates tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Kannberg is landing with strikes from the back.
Kannberg scores with punches to the body.

Kannberg is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Bates has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Kannberg has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Bates taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Kannberg doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Scott Kannberg!
After winning the bout, Scott Kannberg thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
James Bates was interviewed post fight and said 'All I can say man is, props to my opponent tonight. He was a tough son of a bitch, and tonight he was the better man. I just wanna thank all you fans, and I promise I'll come back next time better, and stronger!'.
