PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnathan Conway (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Johnathan Conway!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Conway misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Conway thuds his right hand into Jones's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Jones.
As Jones tries to get set, Conway tries to push him back and clinch up but Jones manages to avoid the attempt.
Conway tries a head kick but it misses.
Jones wants to clinch up but Conway keeps it at a distance.

Conway has taken the fight to the clinch.
Jones jumps guard but Conway stands there with Jones around his waist. Jones gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Conway gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Conway gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Jones.
Johnathan Conway has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Jones.
Conway misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Jones.

Conway misses with an elbow over the top.
Conway lands an elbow inside.
Jones tries to break free but Conway pushes him back against the cage.

Conway has a couple of punches blocked by Jones.
Jones on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Conway lands with a short head shot on the inside.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Conway tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Conway keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
As Jones looks to move away, Conway throws a big counter combo but Jones just gets out of the way.
Jones shoots in looking for a takedown but Conway manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Jones's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Jones moves to clinch but Conway breaks away

and Conway counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jones is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Conway defends well.
Jones is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Jones wants to control but Conway is keeping him busy.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Jones lands a nice short elbow.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jones wants to take a breather but Conway is having none of it.

Jones is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Conway defends it well.
Well, if Jones is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Conway wants to improve his position but Jones is controlling well.
Jones trying to mount his opponent but Conway defends it.
Conway really is a fat lump.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jones connects with a nice short shot to Conway's temple.

Jones decides to return to a standing position.

Conway closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Jones has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Conway is on him like a limpet, forcing Jones back against the cage.
A left hand lands to the body for Conway.
Jones is trying to pull guard but Conway has him pressed against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnathan Conway dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Conway circles away from the clinch attempt
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
and Conway counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Conway throws a big counter combination but Jones scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

and Conway counters with a shoot takedown. Jones fights it but they end up in guard.

Jones pushes Conway off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Jones tries to score a power double leg takedown but Conway sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Jones somewhat.
Conway is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Jones.

Jones moves in looking to clinch but Conway pushes him off.
Nice takedown defense from Conway. No joy for Jones on that attempt.
Conway is looking for a counter combo.

Conway shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jones is trying to defend but Conway finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Conway has control of Jones's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Jones regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Conway goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Jones turns into him and now he's in Conway's guard.
Jones won't allow Conway to sweep him here.
Jones pushes down on Conway's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Jones wants to work for an arm triangle but Conway is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Jones is looking to stall here but Conway recovers full guard.
Jones chips away with some ground and pound.

Conway looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Conway is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Jones controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Jones makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Jon Jones has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Conway is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Johnathan Conway will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Horrible takedown attempt by Jones or perhaps it was just good defense by Conway, which made it look bad.

Jones misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Conway went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Jones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Conway but Conway pushes him off and we're back to square one.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Conway accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Conway stands and steps away. Jones gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Jones tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Conway swivels and escapes.

Jones gets caught napping as Conway dives in and scores a takedown. Jones manages to retain guard.

Conway postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Jones is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Conway, into his guard.

Jones works over Conway with some ground and pound from guard.

Jones gets to his feet. Conway looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

and Conway counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Conway lands a left hand that snaps the head of Jones backwards.
Conway avoiding damage as Jones throws knees to the body.
Jones lands with a short head shot on the inside.

An uppercut to the body lands inside from Conway.

Jones has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Conway uses from the top position.
Jones throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Conway drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Jones manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Conway has Jones in his guard.


Conway working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jones manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Conway might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Jones wants to control from the top but Conway keeps moving.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Johnathan Conway.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Conway, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
