PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rob Spangler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Toby Powers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rob Spangler had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rob Spangler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Toby Powers!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Valeri Chadov and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Spangler looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Powers missing with a left hand there. Spangler was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Powers closes the distance and clinches up with Spangler, looking for a takedown. Powers pushes Spangler against the cage but Spangler circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Spangler is looking to counter punch.
Powers tries for a takedown but Spangler circles away easily
and Spangler counters with a nice body shot.
Spangler tries to close the distance and clinch up but Powers swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Spangler tries to clinch up.
A countering left hand to the body from Powers misses.
Powers avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Spangler bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Powers's head backwards.
Powers tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Spangler swivels and escapes.
Rob Spangler has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Toby Powers.

Spangler fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Powers, pushing him back against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Spangler breaks from the clinch.
Powers dives in and grabs Spangler's left leg, looking for a takedown. Spangler pushes down on Powers's head and hops out.
Spangler tries to clinch but Powers is having none of it.
Spangler lands with a nice body punch.
Powers swats away the attempt to clinch by Spangler.

Spangler tries to close the distance and clinch up but Powers swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Spangler cracks Powers with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Powers looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Spangler finish him?


Powers is rocked!
Spangler wants to clinch up but Powers keeps it at a distance.
Powers is still on wobbly legs! Can Spangler finish him?
Spangler tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Powers paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Powers seems to have recovered his senses.
Spangler tries to clinch but Powers is having none of it.
Spangler lands with a shot to the body.
Powers looks winded!
Spangler tries to clinch up but Powers circles away and keeps his distance.
Spangler closes the distance looking to clinch

and Powers counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Spangler!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
You can see the frustration on Spangler's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Powers looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Powers tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Powers working away.
Powers sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Spangler is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Powers is trying to get an arm triangle but Spangler is defending well.
Powers is working Spangler over with some ground and pound from side control.
Spangler is not content to let Powers control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spangler struggling a bit here.

Powers is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Spangler has escaped the position, nice work there.
Powers grinds an elbow into Spangler's temple.
Powers misses with the ground and pound.

Powers is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Spangler knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Spangler gets back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Powers is working for a submission of some sort.
Powers passes the guard and advances to mount!
Powers avoids the attempt from Spangler to control.
Powers can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Spangler is looking to escape.

Powers moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Spangler has worked his arm free - good work by Spangler!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rob Spangler dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Spangler closes the distance looking to clinch

and Powers decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Spangler's guard.

Powers drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Spangler manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Powers has Spangler in his guard.

Powers has control of Spangler's left arm, preventing Spangler from doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Spangler trying to stand up but can't free himself from Powers's guard.

Powers is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Powers wants to sweep but no luck.

Spangler got a little sloppy there for a moment and Powers has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Spangler has managed to get both his arms back between Powers's legs - danger averted.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Spangler wants to stand but Powers is controlling his posture from full guard.
Powers controls Spangler momentarily but Spangler frees himself.
Spangler wanted to stand there but Powers had control of the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Powers is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Spangler trying to control the position from guard on top but Powers is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Powers throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Powers shoots and misses
and Spangler counters with a right hand to the body.
We've been told by Spangler's head coaches at The SkrapBox that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Spangler moves in looking to clinch but Powers pushes him off.
Spangler displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Powers.
Powers is breathing heavily.
Spangler wants to clinch.
Spangler wants to clinch.
Spangler uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Powers has time to react.
Toby Powers is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Spangler connects with a body shot that sends Powers's belly button to the back.
Rob Spangler is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Spangler lands a right hook to the body.
Rob Spangler seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Spangler ducks down into range and throws a picture perfect right hook that connects with Powers's jaw. Powers's eyes stare off into space as he falls to the mat, out cold! Spangler does the decent thing and steps back, rather than landing any shots to his unconscious opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Rob Spangler!
