PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Brendan Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Sampson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brendan Stevens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Sampson!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Leandro Rodrigues and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sampson clinches up with Stevens and pushes him back against the cage.
Sampson is working Stevens over against the cage.

Sampson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Stevens will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Sampson rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Stevens moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Sampson throws a series of punches but Stevens avoids them all with ease.
Stevens throws a body kick that misses.
Sampson throws a right hand that Stevens ducks under and follows up with a left that Stevens also avoids with ease.
Stevens is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Sampson.

Stevens shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Sampson is trying to defend but Stevens finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Stevens really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Sampson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Stevens is working away from the top position though.

Stevens looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Sampson shoots in but Stevens avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Sampson lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Sampson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Sampson won't allow Stevens to get back to his feet.
Sampson with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Stevens keeping moving, preventing Sampson from controlling successfully.
Stevens wants to stand up but Sampson is controlling him.

Stevens has his foot on Sampson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sampson works his way back into a safe position though.
Stevens is breathing heavily.

Stevens will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Stevens wants to get back to his feet but Sampson is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Sampson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Sampson closes the distance and clinches up with Stevens, looking for a takedown. Sampson pushes Stevens against the cage but Stevens circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Stevens appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Brendan Stevens has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Sampson.

Sampson moves into range and clinches up with Stevens.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Sampson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sampson moves in looking to clinch but Stevens pushes him off.
Stevens seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Sampson dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Sampson tries to move into range but Stevens moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Stevens checks the leg kick nicely there.
Sampson misses with a double jab.
Stevens avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Stevens half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Nice shot lands for Sampson.

Sampson moves into the clinch successfully.
Sampson tries to pull guard but Stevens holds him up against the cage and eventually Sampson drops back down to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stevens is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Sampson gets control of Stevens's arms and successfully pulls guard. Sampson will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Stevens wants to control from the top but Sampson keeps moving.

Sampson has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Sampson manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Sampson wants to take a breather but Stevens is having none of it.
Sampson works his foot free and advances to mount.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Stevens wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Sampson lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Sampson tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Stevens is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sampson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Sampson lands a couple of good shots and Stevens has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
Sampson really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Stevens.

Sampson has Stevens flattened out and is raining down punches.
Stevens is trying to get back to his feet but Sampson has full control of the position and if anything, Stevens has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Sampson is landing big shots and Stevens is squirming looking to escape! He can't escape though and the ref jumps in to end the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:30 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Sampson!
After the fight, John Sampson was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
