PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Owen Rivers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andre Bothma (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Owen Rivers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Andre Bothma!
The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Ben Hemmingworth and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rivers misses with a takedown attempt - Bothma sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Bothma closes the distance and pushes Rivers back into the cage.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Bothma has eaten all the pies!

Rivers has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Bothma uses from the top position.

Rivers looking for a guillotine here but Bothma defends easily.
Bothma controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rivers is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bothma lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Rivers tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Bothma has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Bothma drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Bothma jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Rivers wants to stand up but Bothma is controlling him.

Rivers is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rivers has his foot on Bothma's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Bothma works his way back into a safe position though.
Rivers can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Bothma controls the pace.

Bothma gets to his feet - Rivers follows without any prompting.

Bothma closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Bothma is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Rivers is defending well for now.

Bothma's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Bothma closes the distance and clinches.

Bothma breaks from the clinch.

Bothma closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Rivers quickly recovers to half guard.

Rivers is trying to control but can't.
Bothma is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Rivers keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Bothma stalling.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Bothma working over Rivers with some ground and pound. Rivers looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Bothma wants to pass to mount but Rivers is defending the position.

Rivers is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Bothma pulls his head out easily.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Bothma is trying to keep Rivers in close.
Rivers has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Rivers will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Bothma has hold of Rivers's hands but Rivers slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Bothma makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Bothma.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Rivers is looking to stand up but Bothma won't let him.
Bothma has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Rivers has passed into side control.
Bothma is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Rivers is controlling him well.
Bothma is looking for a sweep.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Rivers tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Bothma manages to circle out of the way.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Bothma gets control of Rivers's arms and successfully pulls guard. Bothma will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Rivers is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Bothma is trying to keep Rivers in close.
Bothma throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Bothma pulls Rivers in close to his closed guard and prevents Rivers from doing any damage or advancing position.
Bothma has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Bothma wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Rivers manages to pass to side control.

Bothma might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Rivers haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

A close second round but Andre Bothma will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Rivers really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rivers has an active guard here but Bothma has managed to pass into half guard.
Bothma looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rivers with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Bothma is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Rivers is just riding it out for now. Bothma eventually gives up the hold.

Bothma seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Bothma wants to stand but Rivers has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Bothma loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Bothma bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
You can see the frustration on Rivers's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rivers is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Bothma's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Bothma's back!

Bothma takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Andre Bothma is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Rivers scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Bothma is looking for a way out.

I would just about give that final round to Andre Bothma.
Well Bothma has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
