PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Geraldo Mathews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Rieger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Geraldo Mathews!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kevin Rieger!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Dillan Fox and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rieger shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rieger was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Mathews sneaks out the side door and pushes Rieger away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Mathews enables Rieger to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Mathews manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Mathews wriggles free and stands up.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Rieger closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Rieger lands in his opponent's guard.
Mathews could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Rieger engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Mathews has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rieger can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Rieger wants to stand but Mathews has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Mathews lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Mathews prevents Rieger from getting back to his feet.
Rieger wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Rieger tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rieger is on top in guard.

Mathews wants to improve his position but instead Rieger has moved into half guard.

Mathews is defending against the submission attempts here by Rieger.
Rieger blocks the strikes from Mathews.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Rieger seems to be looking for submissions.
Mathews is not content to let Rieger control the position.
Mathews is trying to escape back to his feet but Rieger uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Mathews knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rieger on the ground.
Rieger content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Kevin Rieger will probably get the nod.

Rieger shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Rieger showed some decent athleticism there.

Mathews tries to reverse the position but Rieger maintains control.
Mathews is squirming around, avoiding Rieger's attempts to control the action.
Mathews is in all sorts of trouble here.

Rieger working for a guillotine from mount but Mathews is in no mood to give up.

Rieger throwing strikes here but Mathews is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Mathews can't escape the position.
Rieger controlling the pace for now.

Rieger swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Mathews is now in Rieger's guard. A big mistake from Rieger there, giving up the dominant position!
Rieger is trying to control the position but Mathews postures up.

Mathews avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Rieger working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mathews doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mathews manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mathews throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rieger works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Rieger is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Mathews is aware though and is defending well.

Kevin Rieger has got the better of the ground game so far.

Rieger is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kevin Rieger showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Rieger wants the takedown. Mathews is fighting it off but Rieger persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mathews's guard against the cage.
Mathews is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Rieger dives into side control.

Rieger tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rieger wants to stand but Mathews is controlling his arm.

Rieger decides to stand back up. Rieger steps back and let's Mathews get back to his feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Rieger gets a clinch.

Rieger escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Rieger throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Mathews moves into range and clinches up with Rieger.

Rieger shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rieger was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Rieger is staying tight to Mathews's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Rieger wants to control but Mathews is keeping him busy.

Rieger tries to score with some ground and pound. Mathews controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Rieger is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Mathews knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Rieger has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Rieger is looking to take a break and control but Mathews is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Mathews can't do much from the bottom here.
Geraldo Mathews has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kevin Rieger is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

I've got Rieger winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
