PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Drew Wood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Austin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wood has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Drew Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Steve Austin!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Michael Johnstone and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Austin looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Wood!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Austin lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Austin in side control lands a decent elbow.
Wood tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Austin in side control, just content to control the action for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wood on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wood is looking to reverse the position.

Austin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Austin working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Austin lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Wood down.
Austin gets to mount! Wood was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Austin tries to take Wood's back but instead Wood uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
Austin is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Austin tries to stand and escape but Wood is controlling the position.
Wood is looking to escape.
Well, if Austin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
It looks like Austin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Austin works his foot free and advances to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Austin jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Wood is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Wood and Austin has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Wood being controlled for a moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Wood takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Austin controlling the position from side mount.
Austin laying and praying for a moment but Wood takes advantage and regains half guard.
Wood is looking to control Austin's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Wood avoid being mounted?
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Austin stalling.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Austin dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Wood lands a nice hook to Austin's body. Austin takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Wood lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Wood's jab looks to have found its range, popping Austin under the eye.
Austin throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
As Austin backs away, Wood returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Drew Wood seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wood with a jab.
Wood tries to close the distance and clinch up but Austin swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Austin connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Austin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Austin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Wood keeps working.
Wood manages to get back to half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Austin scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Well, if Austin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Wood trying to control but Austin postures up.
Austin not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Wood moves into full guard.
Austin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Wood is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Austin off and has taken his back!
Austin can't escape the position.
Austin trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Wood has one arm under Austin 's neck. Austin is controlling the other arm well. He's just looking to survive right now. Wood manages to get his arm free though and Austin is in a world of trouble! Wood sinks in the hooks and squeezes! Austin turns purple and then goes limp. The referee steps in to end the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Drew Wood!
