DUEL#50 Overstreet vs Puno PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Volga Overstreet and Tyaf Daeland Puno. Puno is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by I'm a soldier - Tupac. Tyaf Daeland Puno told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 wins, 9 losses and 1 draws, fighting out of New York, Volga Overstreet!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 wins, 4 losses and 0 draws, fighting out of New York, Tyaf Daeland Puno!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Franklyn Lucas and Dean Styles.



The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Puno lands a nice shot that snaps Overstreet's head back.

It looks like Volga Overstreet has been cut.
Overstreet walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Puno checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Puno misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Overstreet is looking to counter punch.

Puno moves into range and clinches up with Overstreet.
Overstreet lands a knee to the body.
Puno avoiding damage as Overstreet throws knees to the body.
Overstreet tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
A right hook to the body lands for Puno.
Overstreet being controlled against the cage.
Overstreet trying to land knees to the body.
Puno works on Overstreet's body with a couple of short punches.
Puno on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Puno tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Overstreet's elbow.
Puno is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Puno pulls guard effortlessly.

Puno throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Overstreet escapes and throws Puno's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Puno gets back to half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Puno is looking to get back to full guard here but Overstreet has managed to pass to side control instead.

Puno tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Overstreet tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Overstreet has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Puno is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The strikes coming from Overstreet are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Overstreet wants to lay and pray for a moment but Puno keeps working.

Overstreet working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Overstreet in side control, throwing shots but Puno defends.

Puno manages to get back to half guard.

Overstreet is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Puno is just riding it out for now. Overstreet eventually gives up the hold.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Overstreet wants to take a breather but Puno is having none of it.
Puno moves into full guard.

Puno working for a triangle but Overstreet defends it easily.
Overstreet slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Overstreet's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Puno is trying to hold Overstreet in close to prevent damage but Overstreet has managed to pass into half guard.
Puno tries to get to full guard but Overstreet has control of the leg.

Overstreet won't allow Puno to sweep him here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Overstreet is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Overstreet wants to control from the top but Puno keeps moving.
Puno is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Puno is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Overstreet throws a strike but Puno rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Tyaf Daeland Puno will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Volga Overstreet's cut.
That's time! Overstreet's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Puno has Overstreet up against the cage in a clinch.
Puno lands a nice uppercut.
Puno on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Puno creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Overstreet letting Puno take a breather here.
Overstreet misses with a punch to the body.
Overstreet misses with the head strike.
Puno blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Overstreet throws a knee to the head but misses.

Overstreet's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Puno tries to close the distance and clinch up but Overstreet swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A quick step to the side and Overstreet tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Puno scores with a nice head shot.
Puno shoots for a takedown but Overstreet saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
A little feinted left hand from Overstreet on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Puno slips under a jab.
A telegraphed right hand from Overstreet misses the target.
Overstreet attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Overstreet misses with a body shot.
Overstreet throws a leg kick but Puno checks it.

Nice uppercut there from Puno.
Overstreet cracks Puno with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Overstreet avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
A little feinted left hand from Overstreet on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Puno lands a body shot.

Puno throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Overstreet was covering up waiting for the punch and Puno finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Puno stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Overstreet swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Puno passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Overstreet is looking for a sweep.
Puno connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Overstreet some visible discomfort.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Puno working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Puno wants to lay and pray for a moment but Overstreet keeps working.
Puno tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Overstreet takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Puno has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Overstreet is looking to regain half guard here but Puno keeps moving and retains side control.
Overstreet is working hard here to advance position.
Tyaf Daeland Puno has got the better of the ground game so far.
Overstreet is working to avoid the ground and pound but Puno connects with a decent elbow.
Overstreet is looking for a sweep.
Puno is looking to take a break and control but Overstreet is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Overstreet takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Puno works to advance to full mount. Overstreet defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Overstreet tries to hold on but Puno pushes him away.

The referee warns Overstreet that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Puno lands with some strikes.
Puno punishing his opponent with strikes.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Overstreet wants to control but Puno is having none of it.
Puno scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Overstreet is rocked!

Puno is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Overstreet to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Overstreet shrugs it off.
Puno pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Oh Overstreet is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Puno fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Puno tries to control but Overstreet wriggling away.
Puno cracks Overstreet with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tyaf Daeland Puno showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Overstreet throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Puno shoots in for a double leg counter - driving through into a slam and Overstreet is out! The slam has knocked him out cold! Devastating for Overstreet but Puno is celebrating as the crowd goes wild!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Slam). Tyaf Daeland Puno!
