PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mat Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Angelov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Diaz comes into the arena with I Got Five On It blaring out of the sound system. Peter Angelov has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Mat Diaz's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mat Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, Peter Angelov!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, David Schapiro and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Angelov avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Diaz misses with a right hand
and Angelov counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Diaz.
Angelov appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Diaz misses with a wild body shot.
Angelov throws a counter combo.
Angelov's coach down at Lovelair Muay Thai/MMA was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Angelov's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
A looping hook to the body misses from Diaz. Angelov does a little dance to reset his feet.

Diaz throws a body punch but Angelov moves out of range.
And Angelov responds with a good body kick, but Diaz manages to step out the way in time.

Diaz rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Angelov makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
No joy there for Diaz, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Angelov takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Diaz tries for a takedown but Angelov sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Angelov now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Angelov moves out of range as Diaz strikes.

Diaz lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Angelov uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Diaz.
Angelov is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Diaz with a body shot.
Diaz looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Diaz looks to land a left hand but Angelov moved out of range nicely.

Diaz closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Angelov wants to get back to his feet but Diaz drags him back down.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Angelov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Diaz. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

It looks like Peter Angelov has been cut.
Diaz lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Diaz.

Diaz throws a shot from downtown. Angelov moves away and avoids it.
Despite the aggression on Angelov's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

A nice side step and Angelov releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Angelov takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Diaz connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Angelov's hands.

Peter Angelov is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Diaz misses with a straight right.
Diaz throws a right hand that Angelov ducks under and follows up with a left that Angelov also avoids with ease.
Angelov ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

A nice side step and Angelov releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Angelov is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Angelov swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Diaz lands with a hook. Angelov tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

and Angelov counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Angelov lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Diaz shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Angelov manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Diaz is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Angelov can do to turn this around?
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Angelov has his feet on Diaz's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Diaz cracks Angelov with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

and Angelov counters with a left and a right that stings Diaz.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Diaz shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Angelov napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Diaz tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Angelov is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Diaz cracks Angelov with a big elbow.
Diaz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Angelov is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Diaz asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Diaz is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Angelov has escaped the position, nice work there.

Angelov tries to escape but Diaz is in control.

Diaz working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Angelov is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Diaz has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Diaz tries to move into full mount but can't pass Angelov's legs.
Diaz lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Diaz lands a few punches from side control.
Peter Angelov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Diaz just content to control the position.
Mat Diaz is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Diaz is working to tighten his grip on Angelov's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Angelov has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Diaz is really squeezing tight and eventually Angelov passes out! Diaz breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Our winner, Mat Diaz, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
