PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight kickboxing rules bout between Shane Ripgut (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dam Son (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ripgut comes into the arena with Eminence front-the who blaring out of the sound system. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shane Ripgut!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 1, fighting out of New York, Dam Son!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Son tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Son misses with a looping right.
Ripgut on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Son throws a chopping leg kick but Ripgut manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Ripgut rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Son moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Ripgut blocks a leg kick.
Ripgut has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Bonsai Club MMA in the buildup to the fight.
Ripgut lands an overhand right.


It looks like Dam Son has been cut.
Ripgut wants to clinch up but Son keeps it at a distance.
Ripgut tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Son paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Ripgut pulls out of a head kick attempt.
It seemed like Son was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Ripgut looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Ripgut clinches.
Ripgut is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the ropes.
Son with a knee to the head.
Son tries to land knees in the clinch but Ripgut avoids the damage to the body.
Son using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Ripgut has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Ripgut pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Ripgut throws a jab when Son was well out of range.

Ripgut tries a head kick but it misses.
Ripgut is pinned up against the ropes taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Shane Ripgut seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ripgut throws a hook to the side of Son's head but Son sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Ripgut bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Son's head backwards.
Son scores with a kick to the body.
A nice inside leg kick there by Son. That's going to slow Ripgut down.
Ripgut throws a sloppy head kick

and Son counters by clinching up.

Ripgut manages to break the clinch.
Son takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
Ripgut takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Son throws a leg kick that misses.
Son tries to clinch there but Ripgut circles away.
Son misses with a head kick.
Ripgut pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Son is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Ripgut with a body shot.
Ripgut misses with a double jab.
Son will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Son moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Son looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Ripgut throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Dam Son will probably get the nod.

That's time! Ripgut's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Son works Ripgut's body with a nice hook.
Ripgut throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Son swings for the body but Ripgut moves out of range.
Ripgut seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Ripgut fails with an attempt to clinch.
Ripgut ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Son moves away.
Ripgut pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Son bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Ripgut moves out of range of the leg kick from Son.
Son moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Son tests Ripgut's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Ripgut instigates a clinch.
Son taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
Son throws an elbow that misses.
Ripgut wants to break free but Son has control.
Ripgut is looking to break free of the clinch but Son has double underhooks.
Son has Ripgut pressed against the ropes, preventing Ripgut from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Ripgut breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Son tries a head kick but it misses.

Son throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.
Son delivers a nice body kick.
Nice straight punches there by Son. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Son.
Nice uppercut lands for Son. That snapped Ripgut's head back.
Ripgut takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Son smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
A nice leg kick lands there from Son.
Son connects with a crisp jab.
Son scores with a sloppy right hand. Ripgut should have avoided that one.


Ripgut is rocked!
Shane Ripgut is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Son closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the ropes.
Oh Ripgut is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Son is struggling to control the position.
Ripgut seems to have got his legs back now.
Son trying to control the position but instead, Ripgut has worked for underhooks and has pushed Son into the ropes.
Son is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the ropes.
Son utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
Son with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.

Son gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Son misses with a knee strike.
Son displaying some good clinch control by pressing Ripgut up against the ropes.
Son pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the ropes.

Son keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Ripgut's efforts to push away.

Dam Son seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Son throws a nice outside leg kick.
Son avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Dam Son seems to be getting the better of the standup.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Son cracks the inside of Ripgut's front leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dam Son showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Ripgut lands a really nice looking cross but Son seems unphased.

Ripgut clinches.
Son misses with an elbow strike.
Son taking a breather.
Son lands a good knee to the midsection. Ripgut won't want to take too many of those.
Son effectively controlling the action here.
Son holding his opponent close, against the ropes.
Ripgut looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Ripgut wants to break free but Son has control.
Ripgut is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.

Ripgut breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A nice leg kick lands there from Son.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ripgut wants to clinch but Son slips to the side
and Son counters with a straight right hand.
Son misses with a body kick.
Son lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
A decent looking cross lands there for Son.
Son explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Son has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ripgut moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Ripgut takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Nice body kick from Son.
Son scores with a jab. Ripgut acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Son lands with a thumping leg kick.
Son closes the distance and catches Ripgut with a lead hook that drops him to the canvas! Ripgut is clearly dazed and struggling here! 3,4,5,6,7 and Ripgut is up to his feet but the referee has called it off! Ripgut is still far too wobbly and he's not going to allow the fight to continue! Son takes it!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:21 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punch). Dam Son!
Dam Son spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
The defeated Shane Ripgut had this to say: 'Son of a B%$*& cant win em all '.
