PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rodrick Kidd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Carlos Jones was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrick Kidd!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Jones!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Seu Braga and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones instigates a clinch.
Kidd is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Jones pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Kidd tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Jones manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kidd trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Kidd loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Kidd with a flurry of punches that miss.
Kidd in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Jones can do anything to dispel that myth.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones has his foot on Kidd's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kidd works his way back into a safe position though.

Jones throws a sloppy head kick

and Kidd counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Jones!
Jones is looking to regain half guard here but Kidd keeps moving and retains side control.

Kidd decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Kidd looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Jones is fending him off so far but Kidd persists. Nope, Jones circles away and we're back to standing.

Jones throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kidd was covering up waiting for the punch and Jones finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Jones looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Kidd is trying to stand.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jones in particular looking to stall.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kidd tries to sprawl but Jones drives through with a takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carlos Jones dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Jones wants the takedown. Kidd is fighting it off but Jones persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Kidd's guard against the cage.
Jones wants to control from the top but Kidd keeps moving.
Jones wants to stand but Kidd has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Jones must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Jones utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Jones is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kidd is controlling him.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jones is breathing heavily.

Jones looking to score a takedown here. Kidd is defending well but Jones drives through and ends up in Kidd's guard.

Jones drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kidd looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kidd looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kidd!

Jones is trying to control Kidd's posture but Kidd avoids it.
Jones is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Kidd is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Kidd has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kidd lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Kidd throwing strikes here but Jones is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Jones tries to reverse the position but Kidd maintains control.
Kidd scoring with strikes but Jones is staying in there.
Kidd lands a heavy elbow.

Kidd lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Jones hang on?
Kidd throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Jones tries to lock up and control but Kidd gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Kidd jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Jones is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Jones and Kidd has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Kidd tries for a kimura but Jones is defending well.
Jones defending against the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rodrick Kidd dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Jones misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kidd tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Kidd fails with the takedown

and Jones counters by clinching up.
Kidd tries to pull guard but Jones won't allow it.

Jones has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kidd uses from the top position.
Kidd prevents Jones from getting back to his feet.

Jones controls Kidd momentarily but Kidd frees himself.
Kidd won't allow Jones to sweep him here.

Kidd avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kidd is defended easily by Jones.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Kidd fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Jones avoids it really well and circles away.
Kidd changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jones tries to avoid it but Kidd manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jones to the ground. Jones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Jones tries to counter by closing the distance.
Jones loads up on a big right hand but Kidd slips the punch.
Jones stuffs the takedown attempt from Kidd. Kidd gets slowly back to his feet.
Kidd uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jones.
Kidd is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Jones.

Jones closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Kidd is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Jones stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Jones shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Kidd manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Jones is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Jones's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Jones wants to control from the top but Kidd keeps moving.

Kidd is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Jones defends well.
Jones makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Carlos Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
