PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Newton Salas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ace Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Newton Salas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ace Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Dillan Fox and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stevens clinches.
Salas wants a takedown.
Salas has Stevens pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Stevens manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Newton Salas. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Salas turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Salas manages to end up in side control.
Stevens is trying to control Salas's posture but Salas avoids it.
Stevens is being controlled here.
Stevens is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Salas is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Stevens is just riding it out for now. Salas eventually gives up the hold.
Stevens has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Salas is working away from the top position though.

Stevens is pressing down on Salas's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Salas prevents Stevens from getting back to his feet.

Stevens has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Salas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Salas scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Salas has gone for a leg lock! Stevens slips out almost immediately though and dives into Salas's guard.

Salas could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Salas throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Stevens escapes and throws Salas's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Salas is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Stevens's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Salas is on the bottom, trying to hold on to half guard. He's throwing a few small shots here, to keep his opponent honest.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Salas is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Stevens pulls his head out easily.
Salas is breathing heavily.
Stevens throwing shots but Salas is blocking nicely.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Stevens throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Stevens is keen to just control but Salas is a slippery customer.
Salas tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Salas is not content to let Stevens control the position.
Stevens prevents Salas from improving his position.
Stevens trying to control the action but Salas is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Salas tries to get to full guard but Stevens has control of the leg.
Stevens trying to control the pace.
Salas gets back to full guard.

Salas had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Stevens defends it easily.
Salas keeping moving, preventing Stevens from controlling successfully.
Stevens is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Salas gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stevens to score an easy takedown into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ace Stevens dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Stevens clinches.
Knees to the body from Salas.

Salas is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Stevens can't fight it off and eventually Salas manages to take the fight to the floor. Stevens looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Stevens manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stevens has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Salas ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Salas no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Stevens got a little sloppy there for a moment and Salas has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Stevens has managed to get both his arms back between Salas's legs - danger averted.
Salas wants to sweep but no luck.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stevens is stalling in the full guard.
Salas preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Stevens slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from Salas.
Stevens missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Stevens tries to pass the half guard into mount. Salas knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Salas wants to sweep but Stevens has passed to side control!

Stevens stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Stevens misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Stevens instigates a clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Salas presses Stevens against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

Salas jumps into guard, dragging Stevens to the mat.
Stevens trying to control the position from guard on top but Salas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Salas has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Stevens is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Salas.
Salas is looking for a sweep.
Salas managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Stevens.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stevens wants to control but Salas is keeping him busy.
Salas is trying to improve his position.
Salas regains half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stevens in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Salas tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Stevens!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:23 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Ace Stevens!
