PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Raleigh Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Raleigh Owens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Jones!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Matheus Silva and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Owens tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Jones is in Owens's guard.
Owens controlling Jones's posture.
Jones showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Jones postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Owens has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Jones is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Owens is looking for a triangle but Jones pushes his legs off easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Still in half guard, Jones seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Owens is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Jones pulls his head out easily.
Jones wants to control but Owens is keeping him busy.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Owens gets caught napping as Jones dives in and scores a takedown. Owens manages to retain guard.
Jones stops Owens from standing up.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Owens is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Jones wants to pass the guard but Owens is keeping the position.
Owens trying to keep a closed guard but Jones is proving a slippery customer.
Jones slips nicely into half guard.
Jones is nestled in close to Owens, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Jones cracks Owens with an elbow. That is naaassty.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Jones thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Owens tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Owens gets caught flat footed, as Jones shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Owens is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Jones is controlling him.

Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Jones slips a nice elbow through Owens's hands, connecting with Owens's forehead.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Carlos Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Jones fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Owens to the ground. Jones is now in Owens's guard.

Owens looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Owens working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jones manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Jones drops back looking for a leg! Owens is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Owens manages to kick Jones off! Jones jumps back into Owens's guard.

Jones wants to control from the top but Owens keeps moving.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Owens working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Jones has passed into half guard!
Owens is trying to stand up here but Jones is controlling him well.
Well, if Jones is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Jones is in close to Owens's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Owens is looking for a triangle but Jones pushes his legs off easily.
Jones distracts Owens with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Let's hope that Jones has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Jones.

Owens has his foot on Jones's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jones works his way back into a safe position though.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Owens tries to keep at a distance but Jones has taken the fight into the clinch.
Owens wants a takedown but no success here.

Jones jumps guard.
Jones throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Owens is looking to stand up but Jones won't let him.

Carlos Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
