PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shape Shifter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Greg Coleman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Coleman has chosen I Mother Earth - Not Quite Sonic as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 11 - 0, fighting out of London, Shape Shifter!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Greg Coleman!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, William Peck and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shifter darts in looking for a takedown but Coleman gets double underhooks and turns Shifter into the cage.
Coleman looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Shifter tries to close the distance and clinch up but Coleman swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Shifter has managed to clinch.

Shifter jumps guard.
Shifter looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shifter is looking for a triangle here but Coleman uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Shifter tries to improve position but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shifter is working hard here to advance position.

Shifter is looking for a sweep. Coleman is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Coleman stalling away here and it's allowed Shifter to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Shifter seems a little lost for a moment, as Coleman dominates the positioning.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Shifter tries to bench press Coleman off him but Coleman keeps the position.
Coleman is looking to take a break and control but Shifter is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Shifter is looking to reverse the position.

Coleman got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shifter has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Coleman has managed to get both his arms back between Shifter's legs - danger averted.

Shifter has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Coleman is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Shifter.

That was a close round but I would say that Shape Shifter will probably get the nod.

Coleman connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Shifter momentarily.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Shifter ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Shifter looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.

and Shifter counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Shifter shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.


It looks like Shape Shifter has been cut.

and Coleman makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Coleman avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
It seemed like Coleman was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Shifter tries to clinch there but Coleman circles away.
Coleman connects with a leg kick. Shifter looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Coleman fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Shifter successfully pulls guard.
Shifter seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Coleman is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shifter is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Shape Shifter overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Greg Coleman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Coleman loads up on a big right hand but Shifter slips the punch.

Shifter on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Coleman.

Coleman unloads a knee to the mid-section.
It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.
Coleman putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Shifter in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Coleman lands a left hand that snaps the head of Shifter backwards.
Coleman gets through Shifter's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Coleman is leaning against Shifter and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Coleman lands a big uppercut and Shifter crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Shifter looks OK. Coleman waves Shifter back to his feet!

Coleman is stalking Shifter. Shifter circles to his left. Keeps circling left. Bam! Straight right from Coleman, and it's lights out! Shifter really payed the price for that rookie mistake.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:19 of round 5, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Greg Coleman!
Greg Coleman is the new light heavyweight champion!
After the fight, Greg Coleman was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
