PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Emelianenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Neil Gilas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gilas is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Remember The Name - Fort Minor. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alexander Emelianenko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Neil Gilas!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Topper Green and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Emelianenko dives in for a single leg takedown but Gilas sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Emelianenko connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Emelianenko fails with a takedown attempt.
A looping hook to the body misses from Emelianenko. Gilas does a little dance to reset his feet.
Gilas throws a body punch but Emelianenko moves out of range.
Gilas takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Emelianenko drives through with a takedown into Gilas's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Emelianenko postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gilas is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Emelianenko, into his guard.


Emelianenko is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Emelianenko is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Gilas's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Gilas postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Emelianenko bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gilas's guard.

Gilas is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Emelianenko tries to free his leg and advance position but Gilas is retaining full guard.
Emelianenko looking to sit in guard and control but Gilas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Emelianenko has an active guard here but Gilas has managed to pass into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Emelianenko has hold of Gilas's hands but Gilas slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

My spies in mickeyharts the greatest inform me that Gilas has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Emelianenko makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Emelianenko.

Emelianenko controls Gilas momentarily but Gilas frees himself.

Emelianenko working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gilas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gilas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Emelianenko is looking for a sweep. Gilas is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Neil Gilas will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Emelianenko changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gilas tries to avoid it but Emelianenko manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gilas to the ground. Gilas escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Gilas throws a push kick but Emelianenko slaps the foot to one side.

and Gilas counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Gilas will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Emelianenko uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Gilas.
Emelianenko tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gilas defends well and Emelianenko ends up having to push Gilas into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alexander Emelianenko. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nice takedown defense from Gilas. No joy for Emelianenko on that attempt.
Gilas lands with a kick to the ribs.
Gilas lands a head shot.
Gilas comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Emelianenko shoots in for a double leg but Gilas sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Emelianenko has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Gilas.
Emelianenko sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Gilas fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Emelianenko.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Gilas throws a nice outside leg kick.

Gilas lands a big head kick that sends Emelianenko tumbling to the mat! Gilas takes a step backwards and waves Emelianenko back to his feet - he wants the finish!


It looks like Alexander Emelianenko has been cut.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gilas punishes Emelianenko's body with a nice straight punch.

Gilas connects with a solid leg kick.
Emelianenko takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Gilas throws a nice outside leg kick.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Gilas.
Gilas throws a leg kick which misses Emelianenko's front leg but catches the back leg as Emelianenko tries to avoid it.
Both fighters circling a little - Gilas finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Neil Gilas is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Emelianenko sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Gilas buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Emelianenko has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Gilas.
Gilas thuds his shin into the meat of Emelianenko's side.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gilas lands with a hook. Emelianenko tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Emelianenko takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

That kick from Gilas tenderised Emelianenko's leg. Emelianenko is trying to keep his angry face on.

Gilas has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Gilas lands a nice looking kick to the body. Emelianenko takes a step back to recover.
Gilas delivers a nice body kick.
Gilas throws a quick inside leg kick.
Emelianenko takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Oh Emelianenko is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Gilas circles and sees the opportunity to plant his feet and throw a really nice straight left hand that drops Emelianenko to the canvas! Emelianenko doesn't know where he is but he's trying to survive - Gilas keeps piling on the pressure and forces the referee to step in! This one is aaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:37 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Neil Gilas!
