PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Errol Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Half (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Errol Hughes has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Errol Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Matt Half!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Sam Margolis and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Half tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Half gets a takedown into half guard.

Hughes manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Half keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Half breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Hughes looks for a takedown but Half sprawls well.

Half decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Well, if Half is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Half is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Hughes has one foot on Half's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hughes is defended easily by Half.
Despite the aggression on Half's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Half looking to score a takedown here. Hughes is defending well but Half drives through and ends up in Hughes's guard.

Hughes keeping moving, preventing Half from controlling successfully.
Half won't allow Hughes to get back to his feet.
Hughes throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Half content to stall in guard here.

Hughes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Half defends it easily.
Half wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving.

Half stops Hughes from standing up.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Half slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Hughes tries to close the distance and clinch but Half swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Half throws a sloppy body shot
and Hughes counters with a left to the body.
Hughes throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Half closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hughes's guard.
Half looking to sit in guard and control but Hughes gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Half is on top in guard.

Hughes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Half trying to control but Hughes is working from the bottom.

Hughes has his foot on Half's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Half works his way back into a safe position though.
Half sitting in guard here, content to control.

Half gets to his feet - Hughes follows without any prompting.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Errol Hughes will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Hughes could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Half decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Half closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hughes's guard.

Hughes is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Half manages to break the clinch.
Matt Half seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Half fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hughes manages to avoid it.
Half swings away with a body shot that misses
and Hughes counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

Half clinches.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Half tries to break free but Hughes pushes him back against the cage.

Hughes prevents Half from breaking the clinch.
Hughes keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Half's efforts to push away.
Hughes has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Half avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Half slows down the pace here.
Hughes is pushing Half up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Half jumps into guard, dragging Hughes to the mat.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Half controls Hughes momentarily but Hughes frees himself.
Hughes landing with the ground and pound.
Hughes tries to stand but Half is controlling from the bottom.
Hughes lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Half trying to control the position.
Half is pulling down on Hughes's head. It's preventing any offense from Hughes, at least for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Half showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Hughes clinches with his opponent.
Hughes tries to score a body lock takedown but Half shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Half.


It looks like Errol Hughes has been cut.
Half is trying to break the clinch but Hughes has him pressed against the cage.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Half jumps into guard, dragging Hughes to the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hughes throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Half works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hughes postures up in Half's guard and throws a big left but Half blocks it.
Half is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Hughes is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Half avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Half looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hughes is one step ahead there.
Half is looking to stand up but Hughes isn't so interested in that idea.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Half is working an open guard so Hughes takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Hughes fails to land the takedown.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Half shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hughes's guard.
Half content to stall in guard here.
Hughes controlling the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Half with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Half looking to pass the guard.
Half is still trying to improve position.

Hughes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Half can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Half wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Matt Half comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Half has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
