Bates fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sobaka sprawls well initially but Bates persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Sobaka is looking to improve his position.
Bates is thwarting Sobaka's attempts to control the position.

Sobaka has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Let's hope that Sobaka has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bates postures up in Sobaka's guard and throws a big left but Sobaka blocks it.
Sobaka pulls Bates in close to prevent any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Bates scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Bates is trying to stick to Sobaka's back but Sobaka is turning into Bates. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Bates's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Sobaka.

Sobaka loads up on a big left hand. Bates felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Sobaka looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Bates can't hide his disappointment, as Sobaka celebrates the victory.
