PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Lesley Gill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eric Mittenin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Eric Mittenin was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Lesley Gill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Eric Mittenin!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mittenin tries for a takedown but Gill sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Mittenin shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gill is trying to defend but Mittenin finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Mittenin sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Gill keeping hold of Mittenin's head, controlling as best he can.
Mittenin keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mittenin seems to be looking for submissions.

It looks like Mittenin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Mittenin is continuing to stall.
The adventures of Mittenin the control monster continue. Boring.

Mittenin wants to work for an arm triangle but Gill is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Still in half guard, Mittenin seems content to control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mittenin looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Mittenin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gill is just riding it out for now. Mittenin eventually gives up the hold.
Gill tries to roll over but Mittenin keeps him under control.
Gill is doing well to control the position and prevent Mittenin from advancing to side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mittenin with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Let's hope that Mittenin has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mittenin shoots in and gets a takedown into Gill's guard.
Gill is trying to control the position but Mittenin postures up.
Mittenin controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Mittenin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Mittenin is stalling in the full guard.
Mittenin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Mittenin trying to control the position from guard on top but Gill is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mittenin content to stall in guard here.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Mittenin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mittenin looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gill is fending him off so far but Mittenin persists. Nope, Gill circles away and we're back to standing.
Gill stuffs the takedown.
Lesley Gill has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eric Mittenin.
Gill shoots in for a takedown but Mittenin shows good takedown defense.

Mittenin shoots in and bounces Gill off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Mittenin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Gill is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mittenin wants to control from the top but Gill keeps moving.

Gill will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Mittenin stops Gill from standing up.
Gill is trying to keep Mittenin in close.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mittenin tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gill defends well and Mittenin ends up having to push Gill into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Mittenin tries for a takedown but Gill sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Mittenin is breathing heavily.

Mittenin darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Gill manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Mittenin keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Mittenin pulls guard effortlessly.
Mittenin wants to stand and escape but Gill is having none of it.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gill has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mittenin is proving hard to escape from.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Mittenin fails with a takedown attempt.
Mittenin shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Gill counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Gill tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Mittenin fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gill half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Gill shoots for a double leg takedown but Mittenin sprawls well. He's pushed Gill's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Lesley Gill is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Eric Mittenin has got the better of the ground game so far.

Gill is working for a submission of some sort.

Mittenin is trying to stand.
Mittenin is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Mittenin scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Gill manages to mount him!
Mittenin tries to buck Gill off but he can't manage it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lesley Gill dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Gill shoots in looking for a takedown. Mittenin tries to sprawl out of it but Gill keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mittenin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Mittenin gets the takedown into side control.
Mittenin takes a little break here. Gill wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mittenin tries to advance to mount but can't.
Mittenin controlling the position.
Mittenin is looking to take a break and control but Gill is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Mittenin working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gill really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mittenin is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Gill's shoulder. That is not cool.

Mittenin swings around for an armbar but Gill sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Mittenin's guard.
Mittenin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Gill stops Mittenin from standing up.

Gill stands up and waves to Mittenin to follow him.

Mittenin shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mittenin showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Gill has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Mittenin drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gill looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gill looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gill!

Mittenin avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Gill.
Mittenin wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mittenin tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Mittenin trying to get back to his feet but Gill is in full control for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Lesley Gill.
I think Gill has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
