PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cartel Lopez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mario Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Quando Quando Quando. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cartel Lopez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mario Jones!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Tiny Johnson and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Lopez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jones.
Lopez tries to counter by clinching up but Jones breaks away and moves out of range.
Lopez drops his hands momentarily and Jones takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Jones shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Lopez eats them both and turns towards Jones to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Jones scores with a crisp jab that stopped Lopez in his tracks.
Jones lands a nice leg kick that just misses Lopez's sensitive parts.
Lopez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jones tries to avoid it but Lopez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jones to the ground. Jones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
A nice side step and Jones releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Jones ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.

Lopez gets the takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lopez working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Lopez has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

A close round but Mario Jones will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Jones drops Lopez with a beautiful combination! Lopez stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Jones is looking for the KO!

Jones jabs Lopez right on the nose. Lopez blinks but takes it well.
Jones's coach down at Schneebly's Circuit Training was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Jones's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Lopez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Jones counters with an inside leg kick.

Lopez is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Jones.

Jones throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Lopez seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Jones lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Jones is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Lopez rather than just go for the knockout.
No luck for Lopez with that takedown attempt.
Jones let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

Jones cracks Lopez with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Lopez looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Jones finish him?

Jones cracks Lopez with a left hook right on the temple and Lopez goes down! He's out! Referee! Stop the fight! Jones lands a few more punches before the dopey ref steps in - hopefully Lopez is OK!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Mario Jones!
Mario Jones decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
