PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kaziro Satomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phad Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kaziro Satomi had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 146.9lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kaziro Satomi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Phad Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Roosa Järviläinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes shoots in looking for a takedown but Satomi manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mendes's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Satomi appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Satomi misses with a double jab

and Mendes counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mendes.

We've been hearing good reports from Satomi's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Satomi wants to improve his position but Mendes is controlling well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mendes is taking a breather. Satomi says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Mendes drops an elbow to the side of Satomi's head.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Let's hope that Mendes has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Satomi wants to control but Mendes is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendes seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Mendes is nestled in close to Satomi, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Satomi has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mendes is working away from the top position though.
Mendes looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Mendes slips a nice elbow through Satomi's hands, connecting with Satomi's forehead.
Satomi looks like he's trying to stand up.
Mendes perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Mendes lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Satomi has hold of Mendes's hands but Mendes slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Satomi is looking to improve his position.
Mendes content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Satomi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Satomi looks to land a combination but Mendes avoids it well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mendes dives in for a single leg takedown but Satomi sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
A counter left hand to the body from Satomi misses its target.
Kaziro Satomi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phad Mendes.

Mendes closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Satomi to the mat! Satomi manages to get full guard.

That's time! Satomi's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Mendes keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

A left and a right from Satomi both land. Nice combination.
Mendes misses the shot to the body.
Mendes shoots in for a takedown but Satomi shows good takedown defense.
Mendes slaps away a takedown attempt from Satomi, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mendes not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Mendes postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Mendes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Satomi is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Mendes seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Satomi has momentary wrist control but Mendes slips an elbow through the middle.
Satomi wants to sweep here but Mendes controlling him for the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Satomi gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Satomi is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Satomi jumps guard but Mendes stands there with Satomi around his waist. Satomi gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Satomi wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Mendes has him pressed against the cage.
Satomi wants to get back to striking at distance but Mendes won't allow it.
Mendes wants a takedown.

Satomi ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Satomi no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Mendes is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Satomi is looking for a triangle but Mendes pushes his legs off easily.

Kaziro Satomi dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Mendes shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Mendes was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Check out the look on Mendes's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Satomi gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Mendes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Mendes drops an elbow to the side of Satomi's head.
Mendes uses his free foot to push down on Satomi's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Satomi.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Mendes lands a couple of good shots and Satomi has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Mendes controlling well, preventing Satomi from escaping the position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Mendes really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Satomi.
Mendes gets his hands free as Satomi looks to control.

Phad Mendes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Mendes has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
