The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pate dives in and grabs Aschbrenna's left leg, looking for a takedown. Aschbrenna pushes down on Pate's head and hops out.
Pate will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Aschbrenna fails to land with a series of punches.

Pate jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Aschbrenna walks away with a smile on his face. Pate gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Aschbrenna feints and then cracks Pate's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Pate down.

Pate really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Pate shoots in looking for a takedown but Aschbrenna manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Pate's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Aschbrenna wants to counter with a clinch but Pate pushes him away.
Pate tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Aschbrenna manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Pate moves in looking to clinch but Aschbrenna pushes him off.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Aschbrenna ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Aschbrenna no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Aschbrenna postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Pate to stand up.
Pate throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Aschbrenna's waist but Aschbrenna gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Pate off to one side.
