PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Brian Grimes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damian Brooks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brooks comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The key to victory for Brian Grimes has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brian Grimes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Damian Brooks!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brooks misses with a takedown attempt
and Grimes counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Brooks thinking.
Brooks shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Grimes as he avoids it easily.
A little feinted left hand from Grimes on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Grimes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Grimes stuffs the takedown attempt from Brooks. Brooks gets slowly back to his feet.
Brooks just manages to avoid a counter high kick fromGrimes.
Brian Grimes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damian Brooks.
Grimes cracks a nice hook into Brooks's ribs.
Grimes looks to land a left hand but Brooks moved out of range nicely.
Brooks is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Brooks walks into a left hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Grimes, as that shot connected.
Grimes lunges at Brooks with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Brooks's hand.

Grimes lands a left and a right that send Brooks crashing to the mat, dazed. Grimes thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


Brooks is rocked!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Brooks dives in and grabs Grimes's left leg, looking for a takedown. Grimes pushes down on Brooks's head and hops out.
Brooks is still on wobbly legs! Can Grimes finish him?
Grimes misses with a combination

and Brooks counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Brooks thows a huge punch but Grimes dodges it nicely.
Brooks seems to have recovered his senses.
Brooks seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Grimes tries to roll over but Brooks keeps him under control.

Brooks is working for a kimura here but Grimes manages to reverse the position and he's now in Brooks's guard.

Brooks working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Grimes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Grimes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Brooks has Grimes pulled in close to control his posture.

Grimes avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Brooks looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Brooks is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brooks looking for subs off his back but Grimes has passed one foot through into half guard.
Brooks has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Brooks is controlling Grimes's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Brooks tries to get to full guard but Grimes has control of the leg.
Brooks slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brooks wants to hit a switch here but Grimes passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Brooks there!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Brooks is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Brooks tries to hold on but Grimes pushes him away.
Grimes prevents Brooks from getting the reversal.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Brooks tries to control the position but Grimes now has his back.
Brooks manages to reverse the position and now he's in Grimes's guard. Nice work there by Brooks.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brian Grimes dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Grimes throws a series of punches but Brooks moves out of range.
Grimes looks to score with a jab to the body but Brooks is just out of range.
Grimes connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Grimes throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Brian Grimes is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Grimes lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Brooks misses with a hook. Grimes ducked under it nicely.
Grimes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Brooks wants to counter the offense by Grimes and move into the clinch position.

Brooks's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Brooks duly obliges.

Brooks throws a strike but Grimes avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Brooks is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Brooks is looking to pass into half guard but Grimes pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Grimes is in guard.


Brooks has his foot on Grimes's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Grimes works his way back into a safe position though.

Brooks escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Grimes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Damian Brooks has got the better of the ground game so far.

Grimes can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Brooks is looking to escape.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Grimes lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Brooks takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Grimes tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Brooks was well out of range. Poor timing from Grimes.
Grimes throws a poor cross that misses
and Brooks counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Brooks shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

No joy there for Grimes, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brooks defending well as Grimes loads up on a big left hand.
Grimes tries a head kick but it misses.
Brooks feints the counter takedown.

Grimes tries to close the distance and clinch but Brooks swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Brooks tries for a takedown but Grimes sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Grimes throws a nice looking combination but Brooks bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Grimes waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Brooks.
It seemed like Brooks was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Grimes swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Brooks.

The fighters circling - Grimes throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Grimes throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Brooks.
Brooks keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Brooks.
Brooks misses with some punches.

Grimes has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Brooks has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Grimes avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Grimes throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Brookss head.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Brooks looking to sit in guard and control but Grimes gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Brooks has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Grimes is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Brooks.

Brian Grimes is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Grimes, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Brian Grimes rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
