The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mean tries to sprawl but Whitaker drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Mean scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Whitaker manages to mount him!
Mean is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Mean tries to hold on but Whitaker pushes him away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mean wants to control but Whitaker is keeping busy.

and Whitaker counters with a nice double leg into guard.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Mean enables Whitaker to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Mean manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Whitaker shoots in for a takedown but Mean shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Whitaker shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mean sprawls well. Mean wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Whitaker gets slowly back to his feet.
Despite the aggression on Mean's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Whitaker has hold of Mean's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Mean manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Whitaker is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Mean to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Mean shrugs it off.
Mean tries to control Whitaker's body but Whitaker pushes him off. Mean squirms to his side and now Whitaker has his back!
