PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jesus Gonzalez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tanishk Soni (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gonzalez kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Why Cant we Be Friends!. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 41 - 36 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jesus Gonzalez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 35 - 44 - 2, fighting out of New York, Tanishk Soni!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Soni shoots in for a double leg but Gonzalez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Soni fails with the takedown.

Soni closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Soni lands in his opponent's guard.
Gonzalez wants to sweep but no luck.
Soni passes Gonzalez's left leg - he's now in half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gonzalez preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Soni wants to pass to mount but Gonzalez is defending the position.
Soni trying to control from half guard but Gonzalez is working away.
Gonzalez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Gonzalez tries to get out of the position.
Soni keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Soni trying to control the action but Gonzalez is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Soni.
Soni throws a one two combo.
Soni scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Gonzalez doesn't seem bothered though.
Gonzalez throws a series of punches but Soni avoids them all with ease.
Soni dodges the punch combination from Gonzalez.
Soni looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Soni comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Gonzalez is breathing heavily.
Gonzalez takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

Soni changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gonzalez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Soni has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Gonzalez!

Soni with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Gonzalez tries to reverse the position but Soni maintains control.

Soni stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Soni shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Gonzalez is trying to escape back to his feet but Soni uses the scramble to pass into side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Soni taking a breather here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tanishk Soni dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Gonzalez tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Soni lands a front kick.
Gonzalez throws a lazy uppercut
enabling Soni to counter with a crisp jab.
No luck for Soni with that takedown attempt.
Soni throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Soni fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Gonzalez has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Soni closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Soni lands in his opponent's guard.
Soni slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Let's hope that Soni has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Soni is continuing to stall.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
The adventures of Soni the control monster continue. Boring.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gonzalez takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Soni lands a front kick.

Soni is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Gonzalez's half guard.
Soni is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Soni's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Soni works his way into full mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tanishk Soni showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Soni gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Gonzalez swings wildly with an uppercut but Soni uses good head movement to avoid it.
A short right from Soni on the inside.

Soni pulls Gonzalez into guard.
Soni pulls Gonzalez in close to prevent any damage.
Soni keeping moving, preventing Gonzalez from controlling successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gonzalez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Gonzalez looking to sit in guard and control but Soni gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Soni controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Soni pushes down on Gonzalez's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Soni tries to pass the half guard into mount. Gonzalez knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Soni takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Soni works his way into full mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Soni content just to control the position here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Soni is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Gonzalez can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Jesus Gonzalez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Soni takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Soni takes Gonzalez's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Gonzalez is in trouble.
Gonzalez is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Soni looking to break Gonzalez's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Gonzalez remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Soni will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

And that's the end of the fight!
Tanishk Soni comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Soni has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
