PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Elvin Barrett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Travey Layne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Travey Layne will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Elvin Barrett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Travey Layne!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Layne takes a swing at Barrett's ribcage but misses.

Layne closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Barrett did well to prevent Layne getting side control.
Barrett is trying to stand.
Barrett is trying to maintain the position but Layne is very close to passing his half guard.
Barrett holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Barrett is refusing to be controlled, as Layne sits in half guard.
Barrett has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Layne is working away from the top position though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Layne is just content to waste time from the top position. Barrett takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Layne throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Barrett works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Barrett could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Layne wants to control from the top but Barrett keeps moving.
Layne is stalling in the full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Barrett rushes Layne and presses him up against the cage.

Layne breaks the clinch.
Nice defenses there by Layne.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Layne changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Barrett looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Layne tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Layne has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Barrett is trying to buck Layne off.
Barrett trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Layne slows the pace down.
Barrett wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Layne closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Barrett's guard.
Barrett is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Layne must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Barrett pushes Layne off and scrambles back to his feet.

Layne gets tackled into the cage by Barrett. Barrett maintains the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Elvin Barrett will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Layne shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Layne was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Barrett takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Layne taking a break here but Barrett is having none of it and regains half guard.
Layne perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barrett pushes Layne off looking to stand but Layne dives back in and keeps control.
Barrett desperately trying to maintain half guard.

Layne stands up and beckons Barrett to join him on the feet.

Barrett moves into range and clinches up with Layne.

Layne escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Layne gets a takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Barrett kicks off Layne and gets to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Layne goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Layne is breathing heavily.
Barrett is looking to clinch.
Layne with the counter takedown but Barrett avoids it easily.
Layne swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Barrett gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Barrett pulls Layne in to control the position.
Barrett striking off his back but it's not causing Layne any problems.

Barrett manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Barrett has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.

Barrett is fighting off a takedown attempt but Layne is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Barrett to the mat. Barrett regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Barrett doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barrett is controlling Layne's posture.

Barrett is looking for a triangle but Layne pushes his legs off easily.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Barrett manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Barrett has Layne pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Layne manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Barrett ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Barrett no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Barrett is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Barrett is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Barrett is working for a submission of some sort.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Barrett drops an elbow to the side of Layne's head.
Layne trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Barrett clinches with his opponent.

Layne manages to break the clinch.

Barrett gets caught flat footed, as Layne shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Barrett has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Layne is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Barrett is working for takedown but Layne is calmly controlling the position for now.
Barrett takes a knee right on the jaw!


It looks like Elvin Barrett has been cut.

Layne decides to pull guard.
Layne takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Elvin Barrett overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Barrett lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Barrett scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Barrett working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Layne has momentary wrist control but Barrett slips an elbow through the middle.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Layne is on top in guard.


Barrett has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Layne has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Barrett manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Barrett is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Layne is aware though and is defending well.

Barrett has Layne up against the cage in a clinch.
Barrett wants a takedown.
Barrett is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Layne is defending well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Elvin Barrett. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Layne pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Barrett is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Layne can do to turn this around?

Layne shoots in and bounces Barrett off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Barrett preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Layne postures up in Barrett's guard and throws a big left but Barrett blocks it.
Barrett is pulling down on Layne's head. It's preventing any offense from Layne, at least for the moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
Elvin Barrett showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Barrett, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
