PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between David McCarthy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Lotus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McCarthy comes to the cage accompanied by Chamillionaire - Ridin' ft. Krayzie Bone. Lotus comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Eye of the tiger kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David McCarthy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 33 - 47 - 2, fighting out of London, Tommy Lotus!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Colin Fotheringham and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lotus moves into the clinch successfully.
Lotus wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Lotus is trying to break the clinch but McCarthy is controlling him.
McCarthy has Lotus pressed against the cage, preventing Lotus from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Lotus has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

McCarthy breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Lotus shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

McCarthy manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Lotus keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lotus wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Lotus is trying to break the clinch but McCarthy has him pressed against the cage.
McCarthy keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Lotus's efforts to push away.

McCarthy breaks from the clinch.

McCarthy connects with the punch.
Lotus lands with a straight right. McCarthy didn't see that one coming.
McCarthy takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Lotus throws a series of punches but McCarthy moves out of range.

McCarthy shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Lotus's guard.
Lotus tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Lotus looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Lotus wants to sweep here but McCarthy controlling him for the moment.

McCarthy stands up and waves to Lotus to follow him.
Lotus has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

Lotus gets caught napping as McCarthy dives in and scores a takedown. Lotus manages to retain guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McCarthy throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Lotus works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

McCarthy is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
McCarthy postures up.
McCarthy throws an elbow that misses. Lotus uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in McCarthy's guard. Nice move by Lotus!

McCarthy is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
McCarthy wants to stand and escape but Lotus is having none of it.

McCarthy escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Lotus gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Lotus wants to stand but McCarthy is controlling his posture from full guard.
Lotus stops McCarthy from standing up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lotus trying to control the position from guard on top but McCarthy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
McCarthy is looking for a triangle but Lotus pushes his legs off easily.
McCarthy keeping moving, preventing Lotus from controlling successfully.
McCarthy doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

McCarthy is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Lotus defends well.

McCarthy is looking for a triangle here but Lotus uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
McCarthy tries to bench press Lotus off him but Lotus keeps the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McCarthy is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
McCarthy throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.
Lotus really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McCarthy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
McCarthy is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Lotus is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. McCarthy knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Lotus wants to lay and pray for a moment but McCarthy keeps working.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David McCarthy dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Lotus avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Lotus got a little sloppy there for a moment and McCarthy has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lotus has managed to get both his arms back between McCarthy's legs - danger averted.
McCarthy wants to get back to his feet but Lotus passes into half guard.
McCarthy tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Lotus manages to move to mount!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McCarthy is squirming around, avoiding Lotus's attempts to control the action.
McCarthy is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
David McCarthy overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McCarthy trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
McCarthy wants to control but Lotus is having none of it.

Lotus quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Lotus but it's paid off an McCarthy is forced to tap! Nice work by Lotus.
