Ruiz tries a quick counter leg kick but Smith is wise to it.
Smith misses with the combination.

Ruiz is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Bubba Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith looks to score with a jab to the body but Ruiz is just out of range.
Ruiz drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Smith defends it well.
Smith lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

It looks like Victor Ruiz has been cut.
Smith dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Smith throws a right and a left that Ruiz avoids nicely.
Smith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Smith throws a big shot that misses.
Smith throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Ruiz's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Smith dives in looking to finish as Ruiz flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Smith's strikes! Smith is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Ruiz's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Ruiz was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.
