PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Alberto Simon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jerko Matas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Alberto Simon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jerko Matas!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Paulsen Ambrosius and Albert Achterberg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Simon pushes Matas up against the cage in a clinch.

Simon breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Simon leaves Matas with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Simon is looking for a counter combo.
Matas tries to score a power double leg takedown but Simon sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Matas somewhat.
Simon went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Matas looks winded!
Matas tries for a takedown but Simon circles away easily
and Simon counters with a nice uppercut.
Alberto Simon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jerko Matas.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matas keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Matas clinches.
Simon is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Simon pushes Matas back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Simon manages to break the clinch.

Matas tries for a takedown. No joy.

Simon escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Simon closes the distance and clinches.
Simon is looking to break free of the clinch but Matas has double underhooks.

Simon's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Simon tries to keep at a distance but Matas has taken the fight into the clinch.

Simon breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Simon drives through and clinches with Matas against the cage.

Matas pulls guard effortlessly.
Simon distracts Matas with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Simon is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Simon would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Matas is working an open guard so Simon takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Simon goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Simon has managed to clinch.
Matas being controlled against the cage.
Simon is trying to force a seperation but Matas has the dominant position.
Matas prevents Simon from breaking the clinch.
Simon stalling against the cage.

Simon is trying to trip Matas. He has hold of a leg but Matas is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Simon persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Simon with a nice head shot there.
Simon really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Simon stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Matas shoots in for a takedown but Simon shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Simon gets a clinch.

Simon breaks the clinch.
Nice uppercut there from Simon.
Matas throws a hook but Simon avoids it easily.
Simon looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Simon swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Simon scores with a jab to the body.
Simon misses with a wild combination.
Matas is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Jerko Matas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Matas showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Simon.
Matas tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Matas gets caught flat footed, as Simon shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Simon keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Matas's head.
Simon is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Simon decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Matas, up you get!

Simon drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Matas has momentary wrist control but Simon slips an elbow through the middle.

Simon darts in and clinches Matas up against the cage.
Simon jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Matas walks away with a smile on his face. Simon gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alberto Simon dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Matas fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Simon, pushing him back against the cage.
Simon avoiding damage.
Simon tries to circle away but Matas has him pinned against the cage.

Simon escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Simon throws a nice looking combination but Matas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Matas throws a counter combo.
Matas is breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Simon stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Simon wants it to stay on the feet.

Simon clinches up with Matas and pushes him back against the cage.
Simon wants a takedown but no success here.

Simon decides to pull guard.

Simon pushes Matas off and scrambles back to his feet.
Alberto Simon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Simon manages to break the clinch.
Simon avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

Simon shoots in and gets a takedown into Matas's guard.

Simon decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Matas, up you get!

Simon is trying to break the clinch but Matas is controlling him.
The referee is keeping an eye on Simon - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Simon tries to close the distance and clinch but Matas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Matas will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Simon misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Simon scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Simon throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Matas.

Simon bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Simon thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Matas takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Simon in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Simon lands an elbow.

Simon tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Simon has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Simon working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Simon decides to stand back up.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Matas looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Simon is fending him off so far but Matas persists. Nope, Simon circles away and we're back to standing.
Simon tries to clinch there but Matas circles away.
Simon throws a right and a left that both miss.
Simon misses with a two punch combination.

Matas moves into the clinch.
Simon is trying to break the clinch but Matas has him pressed against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alberto Simon dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Matas misses with a combination

and Simon counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Matas!
Alberto Simon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Simon has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Simon tries for a kimura but Matas is defending well.

Matas trying to control the position from guard on top but Simon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Simon is looking for a triangle but Matas pushes his legs off easily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Matas stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Simon throws up his legs and catches Matas in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Matas tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Simon! That came out of nowhere!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Alberto Simon!
