Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Billie Bates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ron Burgundy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ron Burgundy looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Billie Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ron Burgundy!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Russell Pearce and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bates tries to close the distance and clinch up but Burgundy swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Bates tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Burgundy defends well and Bates ends up having to push Burgundy into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Bates pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Burgundy throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Bates showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Burgundy.
It looked like Bates was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Bates throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Burgundy was covering up waiting for the punch and Bates finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Burgundy uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Burgundy looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Bates shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Burgundy defends it nicely.
Bates could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Burgundy misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Burgundy defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Bates.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Billie Bates. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Burgundy lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bates circles away quickly and effectively.

Bates shoots in and bounces Burgundy off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

As Burgundy looks to move away, Bates throws a big counter combo but Burgundy just gets out of the way.
Bates slips a jab and a cross from Burgundy.

Bates has closed the distance and engaged Burgundy in a clinch.
Burgundy wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Bates has him pressed against the cage.
Burgundy wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Burgundy lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bates circles away quickly and effectively.

Bates seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.

Bates thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Bates looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Burgundy with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Bates seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Bates not landing any meaningful shots this time.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Burgundy is trying to control but can't.
Burgundy takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Bates throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Bates slips a nice elbow through Burgundy's hands, connecting with Burgundy's forehead.

Bates escapes and gets back to his feet.

Bates feints and as Burgundy raises his hands in defense, Bates changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Bates accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Burgundy is working an open guard so Bates takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Burgundy rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Bates moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Bates darts in looking for a takedown but Burgundy gets double underhooks and turns Bates into the cage.
Bates throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Burgundy throws a right and a left that Bates avoids nicely.

Bates changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Burgundy looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Bates remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Bates tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Bates has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Bates wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Burgundy, who protects the arm well.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Bates working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
You can see the frustration on Burgundy's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Billie Bates has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ron Burgundy is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Bates tries to score with some ground and pound. Burgundy controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
