PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derek David (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wayne Bishop (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bishop is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Era Istrefi - Bonbon. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek David!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wayne Bishop!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Jorge Garcia and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
David connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Bishop's hands.
David rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Bishop counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for David!
David tries to get back to half guard but can't.
David is not content to let Bishop control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bishop advances nicely into full mount.
Bishop trying to control but David is having none of it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
David tries to hold on but Bishop postures up.
Bishop looking to control and managing it successfully.
Bishop can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as David is looking to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Bishop has hold of David's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and David manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
David gets back to half guard.
Bishop looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
David wants to get back to his feet.

David kicks Bishop off and gets back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bishop has a takedown stuffed.

David shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Bishop is trying to defend but David finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Bishop has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but David is on him like a limpet, forcing Bishop back against the cage.
David landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Bishop is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables David to keep the fight standing.
Bishop looks winded!
David manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Bishop tries to break free but David pushes him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bishop is struggling to control the position.
Bishop is looking for a takedown up against the cage. David gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Derek David has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wayne Bishop.
David taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
Bishop is trying to pull guard but David turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Bishop wants a takedown but no success here.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by David as Bishop tries to tie him up.
David tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Bishop just stands there and leans against the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bishop tries to score a body lock takedown but David shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Bishop stalling in the clinch but David improves position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Derek David will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


David looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
David misses with a double jab

and Bishop counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for David!
David is not content to let Bishop control the position.

David is trying to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
David wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
David is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
David is looking to control Bishop's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can David avoid being mounted?
Bishop is trying to control. David wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
David keeping hold of Bishop's head, controlling as best he can.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bishop is defended easily by David.
Bishop is breathing heavily.
David with a body punch. A glancing blow.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Bishop changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. David tries to avoid it but Bishop manages to keep hold of a leg and drag David to the ground. David escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
David looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bishop is fending him off so far but David persists. Nope, Bishop circles away and we're back to standing.
David scores with a jab to the head.
David sizes up Bishop with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Bishop takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
David connects with a jab.
David steps in with a hook that catches Bishop right on the chin and knocks him to the floor! David follows him down with more strikes and that's all she wrote! Bishop looks absolutely devastated.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:34 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Derek David!
Wayne Bishop spoke after the fight, saying 'Thank you rival for a good fight, of course it's a pity that I lost, but I will win next time'.
