PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Guillermo Flores (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zach Assad (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zach Assad will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Guillermo Flores!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Zach Assad!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Jeff Smith and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Flores decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Flores throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Flores is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Assad has managed to free his arm - good work.
Flores will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Flores throwing shots but Assad is blocking nicely.
Assad keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Flores is working for a submission of some sort.

Flores seems to be looking for submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Flores seems to be working for a kimura but Assad defends the submission attempt.
Assad is staying active underneath Flores, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Flores thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Assad's head.

Flores is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Assad doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Flores.
Assad tries to kick Flores off but Flores keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Flores wants to lay and pray for a moment but Assad keeps working.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Flores misses with a body kick.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Assad throws a nice outside leg kick.

Assad has taken the fight to the clinch.

Flores pulls guard successfully.
Flores is trying to keep Assad in close.
Flores has control of Assad's left arm, preventing Assad from doing any damage.

Assad got a little sloppy there for a moment and Flores has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Assad has managed to get both his arms back between Flores's legs - danger averted.

Flores has his feet on Assad's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Flores keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Flores gets tackled into the cage by Assad. Assad maintains the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Flores manages to pull guard.
Flores keeping moving, preventing Assad from controlling successfully.

Assad is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Assad moves into the clinch.

Flores breaks from the clinch.
Flores really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Assad misses with a wild combination.
Flores looks to land a body kick but Assad moved away.
Flores fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Assad avoids it really well and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Flores rushes Assad and presses him up against the cage.
Assad wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Assad is fighting off a takedown attempt but Flores is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Assad to the mat. Assad regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Flores drops back looking for a leg! Assad is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Assad manages to kick Flores off! Flores jumps back into Assad's guard.
Flores loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Flores is looking to work some ground and pound but Assad has wrist control.
Flores postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Flores drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Assad dives on top into guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Assad won't allow Flores to get back to his feet.
Flores is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Assad can do to turn this around?
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Flores holds on and takes a little breather.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Assad accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Flores pushes Assad off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Flores avoids a kick to the body.
Assad lands a nice looking kick to the body. Flores takes a step back to recover.
Assad goes for a double leg but Flores avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Flores continues to drive forward.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Flores misses with a takedown attempt - Assad sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
A little jabbing left from Assad on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Flores throws a push kick but Assad slaps the foot to one side.
Flores shoots in and drives through. Assad sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Guillermo Flores. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Assad has a couple of punches blocked by Flores.

Flores turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Flores manages to end up in side control.

Flores fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Flores misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Assad is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Flores asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Flores sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Assad is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Assad is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Flores tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Flores has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Assad is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Flores is controlling him well.

Flores throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Assad's waist but Assad gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Flores off to one side.

Flores has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Assad has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Flores wants to stand but Assad is controlling the position.
Flores lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Flores dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Assad. That did some damage!
