PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rip Vanwinkel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Conner Bear (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rip Vanwinkel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Conner Bear!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Igor Prikhodko and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vanwinkel on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Bear throws a push kick but Vanwinkel slaps the foot to one side.
Vanwinkel tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Bear defends well and Vanwinkel ends up having to push Bear into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Bear tries to score a power double leg takedown but Vanwinkel sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Bear somewhat.
As Bear tries to get set, Vanwinkel tries to push him back and clinch up but Bear manages to avoid the attempt.

Bear fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Vanwinkel to the ground. Bear is now in Vanwinkel's guard.

Vanwinkel has his feet on Bear's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Vanwinkel moves into the clinch.

Vanwinkel manages to break the clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Bear throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
A combination from Bear does no damage.

Vanwinkel darts in and clinches Bear up against the cage.
Vanwinkel stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Bear tries to land a knee to the head but Vanwinkel blocks with his arms.

Bear turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Bear manages to end up in side control.

Vanwinkel bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Bear displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Vanwinkel.
Bear showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Vanwinkel.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Vanwinkel changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Bear tries to avoid it but Vanwinkel manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Bear to the ground. Bear escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Bear flicks out a counter leg kick but Vanwinkel steps away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rip Vanwinkel. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The fight stays on the outside here - Bear looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Vanwinkel is looking for a counter combo.

Vanwinkel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Bear as he avoids it easily.
Bear throws a head kick but Vanwinkel moves out of range.
Vanwinkel will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Vanwinkel chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Bear tries to score a power double leg takedown but Vanwinkel sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Bear somewhat.

Vanwinkel tries to escape but Bear is in control.
Vanwinkel is looking for a sweep.
Bear wants to stand but Vanwinkel is controlling his arm.
Vanwinkel sneaks back into half guard.
Bear is taking a breather. Vanwinkel says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Vanwinkel is looking to improve his position.
Vanwinkel wants to get back to his feet.
Vanwinkel knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Bear on the ground.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Vanwinkel is refusing to be controlled, as Bear sits in half guard.
Vanwinkel is pressing down on Bear's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Bear postures up.
Bear scoring with some ground and pound.
Bear wants to pass the guard but Vanwinkel is keeping the position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Vanwinkel closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Vanwinkel slows down the pace here.

Vanwinkel tries to sprawl but Bear drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Vanwinkel wants to improve his position but Bear is controlling well.
Bear takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Vanwinkel is refusing to be controlled, as Bear sits in half guard.
Vanwinkel is looking to escape.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bear prevents Vanwinkel from improving his position.

Bear throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Bear moves into full mount! Vanwinkel won't be happy about that!
Vanwinkel avoids a series of strikes thrown by Bear.
Vanwinkel tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Bear trying to control but Vanwinkel is having none of it.
Bear looking to ground and pound but Vanwinkel is blocking nicely.

Vanwinkel keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Vanwinkel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Bear has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Vanwinkel really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Vanwinkel wants to hold on but Bear pushes him away.
Bear cracks Vanwinkel with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Bear trying to control but Vanwinkel is having none of it.
Bear lands a nice shot to the head.

Vanwinkel tries to lock up and control but Bear gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Bear lands a big elbow.
Bear lands a big shot there that rocks Vanwinkel but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Conner Bear has got the better of the ground game so far.
Bear with shots to the head and body - Vanwinkel looks very uncomfortable down there.
Vanwinkel holds on for dear life, controlling Bear's posture momentarily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Vanwinkel defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Bear.

Vanwinkel reaches up to try and control the position but Bear seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Vanwinkel rolls and tries to escape and now Bear has his back!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Bear working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Vanwinkel is trying to get back to his feet but Bear has full control of the position and if anything, Vanwinkel has just worked his way into a worse spot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Conner Bear showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Vanwinkel ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Vanwinkel no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Vanwinkel is on top in guard.

Vanwinkel slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Vanwinkel throws a strike but Bear rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Bear looking to sit in guard and control but Vanwinkel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Vanwinkel wants to stand and escape but instead Bear has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
