Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jose Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wang Chung (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jose Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Wang Chung!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Joseph Jones and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chung throws a combination that misses

and Maia counters with a single leg into guard. Chung didn't expect that.

Maia has gone for a leg lock! Chung slips out almost immediately though and dives into Maia's guard.

Chung forces his way into half guard.
Chung lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Maia looking for submissions off his back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chung moves into full mount! Maia won't be happy about that!
Maia is squirming around, avoiding Chung's attempts to control the action.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Maia is in all sorts of trouble here.

Maia is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Maia wants to hold on but Chung pushes him away.
Maia is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Chung is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Chung lands a couple of good shots and Maia has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
Maia is keeping busy.

Chung has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Maia rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Chung seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Chung drops an elbow to the side of Maia's head.
Chung is nestled in close to Maia, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Maia won't allow Chung to pass to mount.

Chung is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Maia sees it coming and defends easily.
Maia wants to control but Chung is keeping busy.
Chung scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Chung wants to pass the guard but Maia is defending well.
Chung lands with a punch from half guard.
Maia trying to control but Chung postures up.
Nice strikes from Chung there.
Chung looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Maia with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Chung passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Maia!

Chung looking to control but Maia is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Chung takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Maia throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.

Maia sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Chung is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Maia displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Chung.
Maia tries to clinch there but Chung circles away.
Maia fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Chung feints the counter takedown.
Chung looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Maia is fending him off so far but Chung persists. Nope, Maia circles away and we're back to standing.
Horrible takedown attempt by Maia or perhaps it was just good defense by Chung, which made it look bad.

Chung drives through with a takedown into Maia's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Wang Chung has got the better of the ground game so far.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Chung connects with a nice short shot to Maia's temple.

Maia is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Chung's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Chung's back!

Maia knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Chung on the ground.

Maia has hold of Chung's hands but Chung slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Chung takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Chung landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Chung perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Maia on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Chung has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Chung has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Maia tries to hold on but Chung postures up.
Chung lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Chung cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wang Chung showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Chung looks to land a left hand but Maia moved out of range nicely.
Maia appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Chung closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Maia did well to prevent Chung getting side control.

Wang Chung is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

BOOM! Chung connects with a massive shot to the dome!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Chung sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Maia tries to lock up and control but Chung gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Chung tries to control but Maia wriggling away.
Maia is trying desperately to improve position.

Chung is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Maia can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Maia is in a horrible position here. Chung smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Chung lands a big shot there that rocks Maia but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Chung tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Maia is working to get back to half guard.
Jose Maia has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Wang Chung comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Chung has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
