PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Yasuhiro Akagi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Karl Denke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Akagi kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Nash the Slash - American Band. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Yasuhiro Akagi!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Karl Denke!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Akagi has managed to clinch.

Denke jumps guard and drags Akagi to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Akagi has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Denke can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That was a close round but I would say that Yasuhiro Akagi will probably get the nod.

A kick lands to the mid section there for Akagi.

It appears Akagi was looking to counter with a kick there.
Denke throws a lazy right hand but Akagi sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Both fighters circling a little - Akagi finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Akagi works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.


It looks like Karl Denke has been cut.
Denke has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Akagi falls off balance throwing a combination
and Denke connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Akagi lands a lovely overhand right.
Akagi throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Akagi misses with a body shot.
And Denke tries to counter it with a takedown but Akagi pushes his down on his head and steps out.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Akagi is looking to clinch.
Denke throws a poor cross that misses
and Akagi counters with a nice uppercut.
Akagi uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.


Denke is rocked!
Akagi tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Denke tries to counter by closing the distance.
Denke is still on wobbly legs! Can Akagi finish him?
Denke swings for the body but Akagi moves out of range.
Denke seems to have recovered his senses.
Akagi takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Akagi's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Denke connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Akagi scrambles back to his feet.
The fighters circle momentarily. Akagi darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Denke throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Akagi.
Akagi feinted there with a counter leg kick.

A jab from Denke misses.
Akagi darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Denke throws a hook to the side of Akagi's head but Akagi sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Denke throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Akagi has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Denke uses from the top position.

I was talking to Akagi's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Akagi digs a right hand underneath Denke's ribcage. Denke let out a lung full of air as it connected.

A relieved looking Karl Denke thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
