The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nikolai fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maroney avoids it really well and circles away.
Maroney changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Nikolai drives through with a takedown into Maroney's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Maroney has his foot on Nikolai's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nikolai works his way back into a safe position though.

Nikolai works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Nikolai cracks Maroney with a big right hand but Maroney just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Nikolai tries to advance to mount but Maroney denies him.
Nikolai connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Maroney some visible discomfort.
Maroney isn't going anywhere.
Maroney manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Nikolai is pressing down on Maroney's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Maroney stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nikolai swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Nikolai wants to sweep here but Maroney controlling him for the moment.

I've been told that Maroney has been drilling his wrestling of late, which has already helped him take this fight to the mat. Let's see how much of an impact it has on the outcome of the ground game.
Maroney should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
