Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matt Mattews (ranked 5591 p4p, 204 weight class) and Mario Eikmeyer (ranked 5163 p4p, 180 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 13 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matt Mattews!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 38 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mario Eikmeyer!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yuuki Gou and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mattews bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Eikmeyer is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Mattews scores with a couple of short elbows.
Mattews working the ground and pound from side control.
Mattews sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Eikmeyer is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Sloppy strikes there by Mattews.
Mattews postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Eikmeyer is looking to regain half guard here but Mattews keeps moving and retains side control.
Mattews has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Eikmeyer is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Mattews off and has taken his back!
Mattews tries to break free.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Eikmeyer lands with a hammerfist to the side of Mattews's head.


It looks like Matt Mattews has been cut.
Mattews can't escape the position.

Eikmeyer is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Mattews knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Mattews for a finish.
Mattews wants to control his opponent's hands but Eikmeyer gets his hands free.

Eikmeyer scores with punches and elbows.
Mattews is trapped and Eikmeyer is scoring with shots to the head and body.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Eikmeyer has the hooks in. Mattews is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Eikmeyer is looking for a rear naked choke here but Mattews reverses the position brilliantly into Eikmeyer's guard!

Eikmeyer has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Mattews has passed into side control.
Eikmeyer tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Eikmeyer on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Eikmeyer has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Eikmeyer takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Eikmeyer tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Mattews is working to tighten his grip on Eikmeyer's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Eikmeyer has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Mattews is really squeezing tight and eventually Eikmeyer passes out! Mattews breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Matt Mattews!
After winning the bout, Matt Mattews thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
