PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Slugger Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gennady Mikhasevich (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Slugger Joe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Gennady Mikhasevich!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Reed Andrews and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mikhasevich throws a lazy uppercut

and Joe counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Joe.
Joe pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mikhasevich is keeping the position for now.
Mikhasevich keeping moving, preventing Joe from controlling successfully.

Joe is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Joe drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mikhasevich manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Joe has Mikhasevich in his guard.

Joe has a closed guard, preventing Mikhasevich from standing up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mikhasevich is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Joe pulls Mikhasevich in close to prevent any damage.
Mikhasevich won't allow Joe to sweep him here.
Mikhasevich wanted to stand there but Joe had control of the position.

Joe has his foot on Mikhasevich's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mikhasevich works his way back into a safe position though.
Mikhasevich is looking to stand up but Joe won't let him.
Joe wants to sweep here but Mikhasevich controlling him for the moment.

Joe had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mikhasevich defends it easily.
Joe tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Joe is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mikhasevich has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Joe is proving hard to escape from.
Joe is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Mikhasevich loads up on a big right hand but Joe slips the punch.
Mikhasevich's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Mikhasevich duly obliges.
Mikhasevich lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.


It looks like Slugger Joe has been cut.
Joe shoots in looking for a takedown. Mikhasevich tries to sprawl out of it but Joe keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mikhasevich manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
It seemed like Mikhasevich was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mikhasevich throws a nice looking combination but Joe bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Joe shoots in and drives through. Mikhasevich sprawls well.
Mikhasevich keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Mikhasevich cracks Joe with a right hand to the side of the head.
Joe ducks right into an uppercut from Mikhasevich.
Mikhasevich fakes a right and follows up with a big left that drops Joe to one knee - oooooh, he's wobbly! Joe looks to clinch but Mikhasevich throws him off and pummels him into the canvas! Joe taps out under the strikes! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Gennady Mikhasevich!
A relieved looking Gennady Mikhasevich thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
