Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sumo Jo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Steve Mazzagati!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mazzagati throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jo's waist but Jo gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mazzagati off to one side.
Jo drops down looking for a counter takedown but Mazzagati sprawls and moves away.
Mazzagati fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Jo slips under a jab.
Mazzagati leaves Jo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Jo displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Mazzagati throws out the jab.

and Jo counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mazzagati won't be happy with that.

Mazzagati bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Steve Mazzagati seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Jo.
Mazzagati looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Jo takes one on the button.

Jo fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Mazzagati to the ground. Jo is now in Mazzagati's guard.

Mazzagati really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Jo works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Jo postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Jo wants to control but Mazzagati is keeping him busy.
Jo is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Jo tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
You can see the frustration on Mazzagati's face as Jo controls the position.

We've been hearing good reports from Jo's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Jo cracks Mazzagati with a big elbow. Oh, he's hurt! Jo immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Mazzagati is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Jo!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Sumo Jo!
