PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Diego Rojas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chavez Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Diego Rojas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Chavez Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Dmitry Maklakov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rojas shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Mendez is trying to defend but Rojas finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Rojas tries to stand but can't do so whilst Mendez controls his leg.
Rojas prevents Mendez from standing back up.
Rojas is thwarting Mendez's attempts to control the position.
Mendez is trying to get back to full guard.
Rojas controlling the pace.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mendez is pressing down on Rojas's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rojas is looking to work some ground and pound but Mendez has wrist control.
Mendez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rojas is one step ahead there.

Rojas is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Rojas has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mendez is proving hard to escape from.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Mendez trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mendez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Mendez fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rojas avoids it really well and circles away.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Rojas scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Rojas is trying to get an arm triangle but Mendez is defending well.

Mendez sneaks out the side door and pushes Rojas away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Rojas closes the distance and clinches.

Rojas keeping moving, preventing Mendez from controlling successfully.
Rojas tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Rojas utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Mendez trying to control but Rojas is working from the bottom.
Rojas looking for a sweep. Not yet Rojas, not yet.
Rojas is pulling down on Mendez's head. It's preventing any offense from Mendez, at least for the moment.
Mendez wants to pass the guard but Rojas is keeping the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mendez fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Rojas is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Mendez.
Diego Rojas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chavez Mendez.
Mendez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Rojas counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Mendez thinking.

Mendez scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mendez is trying to control the action in half guard but Rojas is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Rojas controlling the position for now.
Rojas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mendez is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Diego Rojas will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Rojas is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rojas will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Mendez closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Rojas tries to pull guard but Mendez holds him up against the cage and eventually Rojas drops back down to his feet.
Rojas tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mendez just stands there and leans against the cage.
Rojas jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mendez walks away with a smile on his face. Rojas gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Diego Rojas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mendez shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rojas defends it nicely.
Rojas is looking to counter the offense by Mendez and move into the clinch.

Rojas displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Mendez.
Mendez fails with the takedown.
Rojas stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rojas wants it to stay on the feet.
Chavez Mendez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Mendez rushes Rojas and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Rojas jumps guard but Mendez stands there with Rojas around his waist. Rojas gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Rojas tries to pull guard but Mendez won't allow it.
Rojas gets underhooks to prevent Mendez's takedown attempt.
Rojas tries to pull guard but Mendez holds him up against the cage and eventually Rojas drops back down to his feet.

Mendez gets to his feet - Rojas follows without any prompting.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Mendez throws a right and a left that both miss.
Rojas works Mendez's body with a nice hook.

Mendez tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Rojas shoots in looking for a takedown. Mendez tries to sprawl out of it but Rojas keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mendez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Mendez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rojas tries to avoid it but Mendez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rojas to the ground. Rojas escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Mendez moves into the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Chavez Mendez will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Mendez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Rojas counters with a stiff right hand.
Mendez throws a body kick, spinning off balance
and Rojas connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Mendez misses with a takedown attempt - Rojas sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Mendez bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Rojas's head backwards.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mendez darts in looking for a takedown but Rojas gets double underhooks and turns Mendez into the cage.
Rojas was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Diego Rojas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chavez Mendez.

Mendez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Rojas, pushing him back against the cage.

Rojas tries to pull guard but Mendez forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Rojas jumps guard and drags Mendez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Diego Rojas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mendez trying to control the position from guard on top but Rojas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mendez passes Rojas's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Rojas is looking to control Mendez's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Rojas avoid being mounted?

Mendez is looking to take a break and control but Rojas is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Rojas is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mendez pulls his head out easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Rojas wants to sweep but Mendez has passed to side control!

Mendez is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Rojas is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Mendez looking to control but instead Rojas has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Rojas avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mendez.
Rojas is doing well to control the position and prevent Mendez from advancing to side control.
Mendez prevents Rojas from standing back up.
Mendez controlling the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mendez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rojas swivels and escapes.
Rojas tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Mendez manages to circle out of the way.
Diego Rojas is winning the standup battle so far.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mendez tries to bum rush Rojas with a series of wild strikes but Rojas uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mendez misses with a double jab
and Rojas counters with a head kick.
Mendez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rojas.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rojas happy to just control the position for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Diego Rojas.
I think Rojas has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
