PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Christopher Alesund (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Gaethe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gaethe has a pretty significant injury - he really shouldn't be fighting right now but he's a warrior and he's here none the less! Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Christopher Alesund!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Justin Gaethe!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Peter Branson and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alesund lands with a straight right. Gaethe didn't see that one coming.
Gaethe looks winded!
Alesund with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Alesund really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Gaethe fails with the takedown

and Alesund holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Alesund tries for a takedown. No joy.

Alesund's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Gaethe throws a leg kick

and Alesund moves into the clinch.

Alesund breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Alesund tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gaethe sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Alesund somewhat.
Gaethe with the counter takedown but Alesund avoids it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Alesund jumps guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Alesund holds on and takes a little breather.

Alesund is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Alesund wriggles free and stands up.
Alesund closes the distance and clinches up with Gaethe, looking for a takedown. Alesund pushes Gaethe against the cage but Gaethe circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Christopher Alesund. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Alesund looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.

Alesund throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gaethe.
Gaethe feints the counter takedown.

Alesund moves into the clinch.

Alesund breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Alesund lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Gaethe backs up against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Alesund shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gaethe defends it nicely.
Nice takedown defense from Gaethe. No joy for Alesund on that attempt.
No luck for Alesund with that takedown attempt.

Alesund closes the distance and clinches.

Alesund manages to pull guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gaethe accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Gaethe in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Alesund is on top in guard.


Gaethe is working an open guard so Alesund takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Alesund shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gaethe but Gaethe pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Alesund closes the distance and pushes Gaethe back into the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Alesund breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Alesund feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gaethe is looking to stand back up but Alesund counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Gaethe.

Alesund seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Alesund is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gaethe sees it coming and defends easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Gaethe blocking the ground and pound attempt from Alesund.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alesund fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Gaethe, pushing him back against the cage.

Alesund decides to pull guard.
Alesund has control of Gaethe's left arm, preventing Gaethe from doing any damage.
Alesund is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alesund throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Alesund is looking for a kimura here.
Gaethe really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alesund. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alesund seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Gaethe is breathing heavily.

Gaethe keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Alesund perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Alesund stands up from half guard.
Alesund goes for a double leg but Gaethe avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gaethe continues to drive forward.
A countering left hand to the body from Gaethe misses.
Alesund fails with a takedown attempt.
Alesund throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Gaethe's head.
Christopher Alesund is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Alesund closes the distance and clinches.
Alesund is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Gaethe gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Gaethe shoots and misses
and Alesund counters with a head kick. That will keep Gaethe thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Come on Alesund - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Gaethe is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Alesund pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Gaethe wants to control the action here but instead Alesund manages to pass to full mount!
Alesund sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Alesund has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Alesund is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gaethe can do to turn this around?
Gaethe gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Alesund.
Gaethe stuffs the takedown.
Gaethe tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Alesund pushes Gaethe away with a front kick.

Alesund seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Alesund is on top in guard.

Gaethe takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Alesund thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Alesund tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Alesund has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Gaethe is trying to reverse the position but instead Alesund has taken his back - oops!
Alesund thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.

Alesund has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Gaethe is defending well but eventually Alesund manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Gaethe has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!
