PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Barry Lawson (ranked 9648 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Smith (ranked 4263 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Barry Lawson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Chad Campbell and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith tries to clinch there but Lawson circles away.
As Smith tries to get set, Lawson tries to push him back and clinch up but Smith manages to avoid the attempt.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick
and Lawson counters with a nice uppercut.
Lawson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smith tries to avoid it but Lawson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smith to the ground. Smith escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Lawson closes the distance and pushes Smith back into the cage.
Lawson is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Smith gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Lawson's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Lawson circles away quickly and effectively.
Smith misses with the combination.
Lawson was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Smith closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smith lands in his opponent's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lawson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Lawson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Smith in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Lawson wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Smith wants to control from the top but Lawson keeps moving.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lawson has a closed guard, preventing Smith from standing up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Smith throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Lawson was covering up waiting for the punch and Smith finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Lawson is wriggling around but Smith manages to pass to half guard.

Smith decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Smith misses the shot to the body.
Lawson wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Smith tries to clinch up.

Smith tries to clinch but Lawson moves out of range.
Lawson lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Lawson circles away from the clinch attempt.

Smith feints and as Lawson raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Smith controls from within his opponent's guard.
Lawson can't keep his opponent in guard - Smith advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Smith prevents Lawson from standing back up.
Smith blocks the strikes from Lawson.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smith is trying to control. Lawson wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Smith misses with a combination

and Lawson counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.
Smith wants to sweep but no luck.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith controlling the position easily from mount.

Lawson tries to buck Smith off but he can't manage it.

Smith gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Lawson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smith as he jumps to the side.

Smith shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Lawson napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Smith content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Smith is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Lawson has escaped the position, nice work there.
Lawson is not content to let Smith control the position.

Smith has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Smith is looking to clinch.
Lawson tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Smith manages to circle out of the way.
A head kick from Smith lands but Lawson takes it in his stride.
Smith wants to clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lawson looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Lawson is trying to work for a kimura but Smith is defending well.
Smith pushes Lawson off looking to stand but Lawson dives back in and keeps control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Lawson seems a little lost for a moment, as Smith dominates the positioning.
Lawson wants to get back to his feet but Smith drags him back down.

Smith wants to take a breather but Lawson manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Smith.

Smith wants to control from the top but Lawson keeps moving.

Lawson pushes Smith off and scrambles back to his feet.
John Smith is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Lawson gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Smith to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Lawson kicks Smith off and gets to his feet.

Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Smith swings around for an armbar but Lawson sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Smith's guard.
John Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith controlling the position.
Lawson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Lawson is in close to Smith's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Smith looking for a sweep. Not yet Smith, not yet.
Smith takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Lawson throwing strikes but missing.
Smith preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Smith working a defensive guard but Lawson passes into half guard.
Smith is looking to improve his position.

Lawson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smith doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Lawson.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Smith is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Smith wants to control but Lawson is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Lawson is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Barry Lawson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
John Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Lawson not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
