PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Azar Qasi (ranked 1524 p4p, 249 weight class) and Ansgar Kundsen (ranked 5149 p4p, 657 weight class). Qasi comes to the ring accompanied by For Whom The Bell Tolls. Ansgar Kundsen told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 11 - 1, fighting out of New York, Azar Qasi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ansgar Kundsen!
The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Winston Howard and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kundsen takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Kundsen fails to land with a series of punches.
Kundsen takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Kundsen tries to land a front kick but Qasi steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
A swing and a miss from Qasi.
Kundsen with the counter takedown but Qasi avoids it easily.
Kundsen ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Qasi moves away.
Qasi getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Qasi feints and then cracks Kundsen's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Kundsen down.
Kundsen sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Kundsen keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

and Qasi counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Qasi missing with a left hand there. Kundsen was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Qasi lands with a straight right. Kundsen didn't see that one coming.
Qasi digs a good body shot into Kundsen's ribs.
Kundsen misses with a takedown attempt - Qasi sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Kundsen throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Qasi takes a swing at Kundsen's ribcage but misses.
Kundsen throws a series of punches but Qasi avoids them all with ease.
Kundsen finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Qasi throws a head kick but Kundsen moves out of range.

Kundsen has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Kundsen uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Qasi.
Qasi throws a jab but it's blocked by Kundsen.
Qasi throws out a loose jab but Kundsen uses good head movement to avoid it.

and Kundsen counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Qasi!
This has been an exciting period of action!
The ground and pound from Kundsen seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Qasi tries to improve position but can't.
Qasi takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Qasi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kundsen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Qasi is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Martial Arts Dojo, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

Qasi is working to avoid the ground and pound but Kundsen connects with a decent elbow.

Qasi is desperately trying to improve his position but Kundsen has a good base and remains in mount.
Kundsen lands a big shot there that rocks Qasi but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Qasi sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Kundsen is looking to take a break and control but Qasi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Qasi lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Kundsen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Qasi throws a jab but it's blocked by Kundsen.
Kundsen displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Qasi throws out the jab.
Qasi moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromKundsen.
Qasi's corner calls for a 1-2. Qasi obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

and Kundsen counters with a three punch combo that has Qasi backing up. Qasi nods at Kundsen to acknowledge the strikes.
Kundsen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Ouch! a nice leg kick from Qasi, right into the meat.
Qasi throws a chopping leg kick but Kundsen manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

and Kundsen connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Qasi tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Kundsen manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kundsen goes for a double leg but Qasi avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the ropes as Qasi continues to drive forward.

Qasi throws a leg kick but Kundsen sees it coming and moves out of range.
Qasi swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Qasi lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Azar Qasi is winning the standup battle so far.

Kundsen fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Qasi to the ground. Kundsen is now in Qasi's guard.

Kundsen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Kundsen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Qasi is on top in guard.


Kundsen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Qasi defends it easily.

Kundsen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Qasi doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Qasi manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kundsen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Kundsen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Qasi gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Kundsen has an active guard here but Qasi has managed to pass into half guard.

Kundsen won't allow Qasi to pass to mount.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Qasi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kundsen keeps working.
Kundsen is looking for a sweep. Qasi is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Qasi is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kundsen makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kundsen.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Qasi prevents Kundsen from improving his position.
Kundsen trying to hold on to Qasi's head to control him but Qasi postures up.
Qasi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kundsen keeps working.
Kundsen wants to improve his position but Qasi is controlling well.
Kundsen is pressing down on Qasi's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Qasi stands and throws Kundsen's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Kundsen is looking to regain half guard here but Qasi keeps moving and retains side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Azar Qasi will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Kundsen will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kundsen tries to bum rush Qasi with a series of wild strikes but Qasi uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Qasi fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Kundsen has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Qasi clinches up with Kundsen and pushes him back against the ropes.

Kundsen manages to pull guard.

Kundsen tries to roll but Qasi sticks to his back.

Kundsen is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Qasi has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Kundsen! Can he survive? No! He's out! Qasi gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Azar Qasi!
During a confident post fight interview, Azar Qasi thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
