PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Simon Merde (ranked 6283 p4p, 718 weight class) and Edwin Sandoval (ranked 8566 p4p, 816 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Simon Merde has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Simon Merde seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Simon Merde!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Edwin Sandoval!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Trevor Gratis and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Merde works over Sandoval's head and body with a nice combination.
Merde closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Merde throws a right hand that Sandoval ducks under and follows up with a left that Sandoval also avoids with ease.
Merde closes the distance but Sandoval moves to the side

and Sandoval counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Sandoval stops Merde from getting back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Merde is trying to maintain the position but Sandoval is very close to passing his half guard.

Sandoval is working for a submission of some sort.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Merde throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Sandoval thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Merde punching from the bottom.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Sandoval lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Merde is trying to stand up here but Sandoval is controlling him well.

Merde tries to kick Sandoval off in order to stand up. Sandoval Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Sandoval swings around for an armbar but Merde sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Sandoval's guard.
Sandoval is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Merde wants to control from the top but Sandoval keeps moving.

Sandoval working a defensive guard but Merde manages to pass into side control anyway.
Sandoval sneaks back into half guard.
Merde seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sandoval does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Sandoval wants to improve his position but Merde is controlling well.
Sandoval is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Sandoval makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sandoval.

Sandoval working for a triangle but Merde defends it easily.
Merde stops Sandoval from standing up.
Merde working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Merde trying to control but Sandoval is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Sandoval.
Merde swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Sandoval counters with a nice double leg into side control. Merde won't be happy with that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Simon Merde will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Merde keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Merde throws a series of punches but Sandoval avoids them all with ease.

Sandoval closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Merde quickly recovers to half guard.
Merde is trying to stand.
Sandoval lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Merde looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Merde has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Sandoval is on him like a limpet, forcing Merde back against the cage.
Sandoval is looking for a takedown.
Sandoval can't get the takedown.
Simon Merde has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Edwin Sandoval.

Merde pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Merde looks to clinch

and Sandoval counters with a nice double leg into side control. Merde won't be happy with that.

Merde throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Simon Merde is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Merde rushes Sandoval and presses him up against the cage.
Merde wants to take the fight to the mat but Sandoval manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Merde is trying to break the clinch but Sandoval is controlling him.
Sandoval has Merde pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Merde manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Merde is fighting off a takedown attempt but Sandoval is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Merde to the mat. Merde regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Merde is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Sandoval is controlling him.

Sandoval is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Merde wants to stand up but Sandoval is controlling him.
Edwin Sandoval has got the better of the ground game so far.
Sandoval stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Merde swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Merde misses with a jab, cross combination.
Sandoval shoots in for a double leg but Merde sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Merde misses with a series of wild punches.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A lull in the action here.
Let's hope that Sandoval has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

That was a close second round but I would say that Simon Merde will probably get the nod.
That's time! Merde's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Sandoval is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Merde is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Merde regains half guard there - taking advantage of Sandoval's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sandoval is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Oh Merde is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Sandoval is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Merde has managed to free his arm - good work.
Sandoval lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Merde! More strikes land and this one is all over! Sandoval jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!
