PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Lyman Kissell (ranked 520 p4p, 62 weight class) and Zang Zhai (ranked 822 p4p, 85 weight class). Zhai comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Sampans kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Lyman Kissell has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lyman Kissell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 12 - 0, fighting out of London, Zang Zhai!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kissell rushes Zhai and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Nice body punch from Zhai - that landed with a thud.
Kissell has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Kissell manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Kissell tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Kissell gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Kissell missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Zhai pulls Kissell in close to his closed guard and prevents Kissell from doing any damage or advancing position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Zhai walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Kissell checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Kissell misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Zhai.
Zhai appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick.
Zhai scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Kissell doesn't seem bothered though.
Zhai clobbers Kissell with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Zhai paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Kissell connects with a jab.
Zhai fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kissell manages to avoid it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Kissell bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Zhai takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Zhai throws a low kick but Kissell moves out of range easily.
A big left from Zhai misses.
Kissell misses with an uppercut
and Zhai counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

and Zhai counters with a one-two to the body.
Kissell has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Zhai.
A decent looking cross lands there for Kissell.

Zhai takes a swing at Kissell's ribcage but misses.
Zang Zhai is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Kissell takes one to the side of the head.
Zhai thumps Kissell with a low kick.
Kissell takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Kissell shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Kissell dives in and scores a takedown into Zhai's guard.
Zhai looking to control.
Kissell is looking to work some ground and pound but Zhai has wrist control.
Kissell trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Zhai is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Let's hope that Zhai has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Kissell is looking to work some ground and pound but Zhai has wrist control.
Kissell has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Kissell throws an elbow that misses. Zhai uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Kissell's guard. Nice move by Zhai!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kissell will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Zhai pushes down on Kissell's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Kissell is staying active underneath Zhai, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Zang Zhai will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Kissell loads up on a big right hand but Zhai slips the punch.
A lazy left from Kissell finds it's target.
Good exchange - Kissell coming out on top.
Zhai cracks Kissell with a right hand to the side of the head.
Zhai cracks Kissell with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Zhai bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Zhai throws a shot from downtown. Kissell moves away and avoids it.
Kissell half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Zhai blocks a jab.
Kissell takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Zhai tries to bum rush Kissell with a series of wild strikes but Kissell uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Zhai throws a push kick but Kissell slaps the foot to one side.
Zhai misses the shot to the body.
Zhai has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Kissell closes this distance looking for a takedown but Zhai circles away.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kissell is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Zhai lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.

Kissell tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Zhai blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Kissell lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Zhai throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Kissell is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Kissell wants the takedown. Zhai is fighting it off but Kissell persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Zhai's guard against the cage.
Zhai seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Zhai ducks right into an uppercut from Kissell.

Kissell lands a jab to Zhai's midsection.
Kissell throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Zhai.
Kissell misses with a takedown attempt - Zhai sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

and Kissell takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kissell wants to slow Zhai down by chopping away at his legs.
Kissell throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Zhai's waist but Zhai gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kissell off to one side.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Kissell throws the left hand but Zhai avoids the punch easily.
Kissell goes for a double leg but Zhai avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Zhai continues to drive forward.

Zhai tries a quick counter leg kick but Kissell is wise to it.

enabling Zhai to counter with a crisp jab.
Zhai throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Kissell shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Zhai as he jumps to the side.
Zhai stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Zhai wants it to stay on the feet.
As Kissell backs off Zhai throws a huge counter combo but Kissell manages to avoid it all.
Zhai slips a jab from Kissell.
Kissell throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Zhai! But no joy.
Kissell ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Lyman Kissell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Kissell fails with the takedown
and Zhai counters with an outside leg kick.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
A lazy left from Zhai finds it's target.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A looping hook to the body misses from Kissell. Zhai does a little dance to reset his feet.
A cross from Zhai lands.
Zhai lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Zhai throws a good cross that connects.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Kissell, right into the meat.

Kissell gets tackled into the cage by Zhai. Zhai maintains the clinch.

Zhai breaks from the clinch.
Kissell takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Kissell doesn't manage to clinch there - Zhai circles away.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Zhai! But no joy.
A swing and a miss from Kissell.
Zang Zhai seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Kissell fails to land the takedown.

Zhai fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Kissell checks it well.
Zhai lands with a cross.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Zhai is trying to improve his position.
Zhai is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Kissell wants to control but Zhai is keeping him busy.

Kissell is looking for submissions but instead, Zhai has regained full guard.
Kissell postures up in Zhai's guard and throws a big left but Zhai blocks it.

Kissell forces his way into half guard.
Kissell throwing shots but Zhai is blocking nicely.
Kissell wants to take a breather but Zhai is having none of it.
Kissell throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Zhai to regain full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Zang Zhai comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Zhai winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
