PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joey Warren (ranked 3881 p4p, 520 weight class) and Steve McKenna (ranked 6061 p4p, 707 weight class). McKenna has chosen My Buddy Steve - Zane Lamprey as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Steve McKenna!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Michael Johnstone and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKenna scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Warren tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but McKenna was well out of range. Poor timing from Warren.
McKenna connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Warren's hands.
McKenna avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
McKenna misses with a jab, cross combination.
McKenna throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Warren sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Warren swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
McKenna looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
McKenna wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
McKenna misses with the combination.

Warren fakes high and swings low for a body shot but McKenna manages to avoid it.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Warren lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but McKenna circles away quickly and effectively.
Joey Warren seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

McKenna shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Warren has been working on his balance at Blood Warrior, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by McKenna.
McKenna throws a nice looking combination but Warren bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

and McKenna counters with a nice uppercut.

It looked like Warren was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
McKenna shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Warren eats them both and turns towards McKenna to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Warren throws an overhand right that lands on McKenna's shoulder, as McKenna tries to avoid the shot.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

McKenna is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Warren had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.
Warren tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but McKenna paws at him with a jab and circles away.
McKenna scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Warren throws a combination but it was largely blocked by McKenna.
Warren takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
McKenna scores with a hook to the body. Warren takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Steve McKenna is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Warren takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.


Joey Warren's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.

Warren appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

McKenna fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Warren closes the distance but McKenna moves to the side
and McKenna counters with a right hand to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Sloppy strikes from Warren. Those never looked like landing.
Warren's hands are dropping dangerously low here and McKenna connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Warren scrambles back to his feet.

Warren seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

McKenna is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
McKenna pulls Warren in close to prevent any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
McKenna uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.

Warren has taken the fight to the clinch.

McKenna breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
