PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Harold Haynes (ranked 6516 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joey Payne (ranked 25648 p4p, 479 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Harold Haynes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joey Payne!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Payne does it's job there.
Payne pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Haynes throws a counter high kick but Payne was just alert enough to avoid it.
Payne attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Payne changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Haynes looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Payne has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at X-Fit. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Haynes is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Payne is controlling him well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Payne thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Payne tries to score a power double leg takedown but Haynes sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Payne somewhat.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Haynes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Payne but Payne pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Payne moves into the clinch.

Haynes breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Payne darts in and clinches Haynes up against the cage.

Payne pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Haynes decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Haynes looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Haynes's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Haynes seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Payne for as long as he can get away with.

Haynes wants to work for an arm triangle but Payne is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Haynes shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Payne's guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Payne manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Haynes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Payne tries to avoid it but Haynes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Payne to the ground. Payne escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Payne closes the distance and pushes Haynes back into the cage.
Haynes looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Haynes is looking to take this one to the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Harold Haynes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Haynes is looking to break free of the clinch but Payne has double underhooks.

Payne stuffs the takedown attempt from Haynes. Haynes gets slowly back to his feet.
Haynes shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Haynes displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Payne.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

A little jabbing left from Payne on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joey Payne showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Haynes sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Payne's guard.

Payne keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Haynes's efforts to push away.
Haynes lands with a light punch inside.
Haynes tries to break free but Payne pushes him back against the cage.

Haynes breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Payne throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Haynes is looking to counter with head kicks.

Haynes is trying to push Payne away but Payne has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Payne is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Payne utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Haynes stands and steps away. Payne gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Haynes will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
No luck for Payne with that takedown attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Harold Haynes.
I think Payne has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
