PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cain Velasquez (ranked 9975 p4p, 0 weight class) and Randal Keith Orton (ranked 6664 p4p, 0 weight class). Velasquez has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. The key to victory for Cain Velasquez has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Cain Velasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Randal Keith Orton!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, David Hoff and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Orton throws a leg kick but Velasquez sees it coming and moves out of range.
The fight stays on the outside here - Velasquez looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Velasquez falls off balance throwing a combination

and Orton counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Orton.
Velasquez is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Orton dives into side control.
Velasquez is breathing heavily.

Velasquez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Orton on the ground.
Velasquez is letting Orton control him for a moment.

Orton tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Orton has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Orton remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Orton tries to stand but Velasquez is controlling his head.
The referee asks Orton politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Orton prefers to stall for the moment though.
Orton misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Orton just content to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Orton has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Orton controlling the pace for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Velasquez enables Orton to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Velasquez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Orton not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Orton wants to get up but he can't break Velasquez's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Orton is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Orton slips nicely into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Orton seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Orton is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Orton wants to stand but Velasquez has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Velasquez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Orton is taking a breather. Velasquez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Orton works his foot free and advances to mount.
Orton misses with a head shot.

Orton takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Orton quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Orton but it's paid off an Velasquez is forced to tap! Nice work by Orton.
