PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zsiga Venczel (ranked 7290 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafael Carvalho (ranked 8310 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Zsiga Venczel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rafael Carvalho!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Jonathan Paton and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A punch lands to the side of Venczel 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Venczel connects with a good right hand that stumbles Carvalho. Carvalho circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Carvalho on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Venczel smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Carvalho misses with a wild body shot.

Venczel forces Carvalho back against the cage and clinches.
Venczel works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Venczel throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Carvalhos head.

Venczel jumps guard and drags Carvalho to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Venczel keeping moving, preventing Carvalho from controlling successfully.
Venczel controlling the position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Venczel is on top in guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Venczel works over Carvalho with some ground and pound from guard.
Venczel connects with a couple of short punches.
Venczel distracts Carvalho with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Carvalho keeping full guard, as Venczel tries to pass.
Venczel pushes down on Carvalho's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Venczel working over Carvalho with some ground and pound. Carvalho looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Venczel trying to mount his opponent but Carvalho defends it.

Venczel is trying to work for a kimura but Carvalho is defending well.
Venczel seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Carvalho tries to roll over but Venczel keeps him under control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Venczel wants to lay and pray for a moment but Carvalho keeps working.

Carvalho is defending against the submission attempts here by Venczel.

Venczel is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Carvalho has managed to free his arm - good work.
Venczel has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Venczel tries to pass to full mount but Carvalho defends it.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Venczel connects with a nice short shot to Carvalho's temple.

Venczel wants to work for an arm triangle but Carvalho is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Carvalho tries to get to full guard but Venczel has control of the leg.
Venczel trying to control from half guard but Carvalho is working away.

Carvalho is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Venczel pulls his head out easily.
Venczel trying to control the pace.
Venczel looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Venczel is trying to work for a kimura but Carvalho is defending well.
Carvalho is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Venczel sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Venczel is pressing down on Carvalho's thigh, looking to free his foot. Carvalho is holding on for now.
Venczel landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Carvalho is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Venczel stands up out of the half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Venczel connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Carvalho connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Venczel momentarily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zsiga Venczel dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Good exchange - Venczel coming out on top.
Carvalho walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Venczel scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Carvalho doesn't seem bothered though.

Venczel closes the distance and clinches.
Venczel blocks an uppercut.
Carvalho can't find room to land a body shot as Venczel controls the action.
Carvalho throws a head punch that misses.
Carvalho swings wildly with an uppercut but Venczel uses good head movement to avoid it.
Venczel slows down the pace here.
A head punch on the inside from Carvalho fails to land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Venczel as Carvalho tries to tie him up.
Venczel's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Venczel's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Venczel moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
It looks like Venczel has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.
Venczel thuds his right hand into Carvalho's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Venczel shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Venczel showed some decent athleticism there.
Venczel trying to pass the guard but Carvalho defending well.
Venczel seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Venczel is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Carvalho is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Zsiga Venczel!
A relieved looking Zsiga Venczel thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
