PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Karl Karlsson (ranked 1413 p4p, 213 weight class) and Jarvis Avalon (ranked 1074 p4p, 167 weight class). Karlsson comes to the cage accompanied by Nemesis by Arch Enemy. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Karl Karlsson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 11 - 0, fighting out of London, Jarvis Avalon!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Steven Brown and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Karlsson scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Avalon tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Avalon is trying to control Karlsson's posture but Karlsson avoids it.
Avalon felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Karlsson trying to control the action but Avalon is working from the bottom.

Karlsson decides to stand up, so the ref orders Avalon to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A big right from Avalon misses.
Horrible takedown attempt by Karlsson or perhaps it was just good defense by Avalon, which made it look bad.

Avalon ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Avalon no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Karlsson wants to control from the top but Avalon keeps moving.
Karlsson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Avalon swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Avalon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Avalon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Karlsson is one step ahead there.

Karlsson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Karlsson tries to counter by clinching up but Avalon breaks away and moves out of range.

Avalon keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Avalon looks like he wanted to counter with a high kick but didn't throw it.
Avalon lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Karlsson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Karl Karlsson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Karlsson has his takedown stuffed

and Avalon counters with a nice double leg into side control. Karlsson won't be happy with that.
Karlsson bucks up and tries to throw Avalon off but instead Avalon has got his back!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Avalon somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.

Avalon lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Avalon is hanging on to Karlsson's back as he tries to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Karlsson breaks Avalon's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Avalon is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Karlsson defends well.
Karlsson wants to stand and escape but instead Avalon has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Karlsson wants to sweep but no luck.

Avalon looking to sit in guard and control but Karlsson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Avalon lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Avalon throws an elbow that misses. Karlsson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Avalon's guard. Nice move by Karlsson!

Karlsson has his feet on Avalon's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Karlsson darts in looking for a takedown but Avalon gets double underhooks and turns Karlsson into the cage.

Avalon pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Karlsson takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Jarvis Avalon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Avalon throws a predictable looking body shot

and Karlsson counters by moving into the clinch.
Karlsson is working for takedown but Avalon is calmly controlling the position for now.

Karlsson tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Avalon wants to control from the top but Karlsson keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Karlsson is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Avalon is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Avalon slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Karl Karlsson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Avalon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Karlsson keeps working.

Avalon is putting a hurting on Karlsson here, landing some big shots from side control.
Karlsson is trying to control Avalon's posture but Avalon avoids it.
Avalon postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Avalon is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Karlsson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Avalon has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
You can see the frustration on Karlsson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Avalon advances nicely into full mount.

Jarvis Avalon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Avalon leaves Karlsson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Karlsson wants to improve his position but Avalon is controlling well.
Karlsson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Avalon is working away from the top position though.

Avalon is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Karlsson is just riding it out for now. Avalon eventually gives up the hold.

Avalon looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Karlsson wants to control but Avalon is keeping busy.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Avalon connects with a nice short shot to Karlsson's temple.
Avalon thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Karlsson's head.
Avalon lands with a punch from half guard.
Avalon works his foot free and advances to mount.
Avalon looking to finish Karlsson with some ground and pound. This is bad for Karlsson!
Avalon is landing with some decent strikes but Karlsson is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Karlsson wants to hold on but Avalon pushes him away.
Jarvis Avalon is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Avalon takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Avalon is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Karlsson is surviving well by controlling Avalon's body position as best he can.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Avalon cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Jarvis Avalon comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Avalon has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
